Prestonsburg 27 Breathitt County 20

Top game in EKY lived up to it's hype.

Blackcats block a punt with about 1:00 left and take it to 4 yard lien to set up game winning TD.

I wouldn't say it until I saw the outcome of this game, but Pburg is a legit contender for a 2A State Title.

Derossett seems to have Holcomb's number too....

Absolutely top-notch ballgame that had a little of everything !!

Both offenses moved the ball fairly effectively until the 10-20 yd. line. Breathitt Co. had two deep drives turnover on downs and lost another opportunity on a strip-induced fumble. Prestonsburg had a short TD pass dropped, and had another TD run wiped out on a holding call. Two more P-burg drives resulted in Blackcat FG's as the gritty Bobcat defense held firm.

The RB's were everything advertised - Allen Craynon, Seth Setser, and Channing Fugate all ran for a LOT of yards. Don't have the final stats, but each featured a 40 yd. gainer: Craynon's and Setser's went to paydirt, while Fugate's went to about the 10.

Coach Holcomb's game plan, IMO, was well thought out. Breathitt Co. ran effectively out of the spread all night. While many think of the Bobcats as a very heavy passing team, but I doubt their offense attempted 15 the entire game (including the last 4 desperation throws).

Coach Derossett did a good job in calling some early mid-range passes. Those completions were very effective in forcing the BC LB's to play a little deeper than they prefer, loosening up the defense a little for the P-burg power running game.

Frankly, either team could have won. But for the first time in a long while (in a close, evenly matched game), fortune smiled on the Blackcats. Breathitt Co. was forced to punt on 4th and 2 at their own 39 with a little more than 1 minute left. The snap was poor, rolling to the punter. Though P-burg didn't have the rush on, there wasn't enough time to kick and it was blocked. The Blackcats returned it to the BC 4. On the next play, set in the back of the Power-I, Setser followed his upbacks straight up the middle for the score.

Breathitt Co. returned the ensuing KO to almost midfield, but misfired on 4 straight pass plays. Prestonsburg downed it to end the game.

Marvellous high school football game. A personal "thank you" to all the players, coaches, and fans on both sides of the field.

Per WDHR, I didn't hear Craynon's final numbers but:

Setser (Pburg) 16 carries, 128 yards

Fugate (Breathitt) 19 carries, 217 yards

Absolutely top-notch ballgame that had a little of everything !!

Breathitt County is not a passing team any more and they really haven't been for the last two or three years. I would say that they look even more run-heavy this season. That's understandable with a back like Channing Fugate. But personally, I think Breathitt County's passing attack has some potential and they'd be better served to develop it.

Still not sold on BC or P'burg as 2A title contenders at this point. I know what Belfry has been the last couple of seasons and I'm not sure either team is there yet, but there's 8 more games before the playoffs start and I like the potential of both.

Fugate is very good. Hard to tackle, strong, and with good speed for his size.

Playing a running offense out of the spread, though, seems like running a passing attack out of the wishbone. The Bobcats look like they could have been well suited to run an option offense out of a standard running formation. (OTOH, maybe I'm just behind the times and too old-fashioned  )

Agreed. There's good potential, but it's too early yet to know where it will go. We'll revisit this as Breathitt plays Harlan Co. and P-burg plays Beechwood.

Nice win for the Blackcats.

Special Teams, Special Teams, Special Teams!!!

Saw part of the replay on WPRG this morning. That game had a little of everything, as oneijoe stated. BC has to be kicking themselves (pun intended ;)) because of the special teams blunders. And Prestonsburg has a lot to celebrate, its great when fate smiles on your in these down to the wire games.

Must have been a great game it sure lived up to the hype congrats to the Blackcats.

He's the best RB we've had since Jon Chapman ('95-'97) and Jason White ('95-'98).

I agree with bolded. I'm not a huge fan of BC trying to run the Rich Rodriguez offense. I'd prefer to see them run out of a standard I-Formation with some Shotgun stuff mixed in. Just my two cents though...

Breathitt County reminds me a little of the 2001 squad. That group had a lot of expectations, played a very tough schedule in '01, ended 7-5 after blowing a 19 point lead to Belfry in the second round of the playoffs. They lived up to the expectations in 2002 with a 15-0 title run...I think the '01 season played a big part in that. Aside from valuable experience and tough competition, I think it taught them that they needed to work harder and be more focused.

To me, these two losses to open the season aren't surprising. And, Breathitt fans shouldn't think that this year's team isn't as good as last year's...we opened with two really tough games. That's not easy with a new QB, among other positions. The main thing I wanted to see was how competitive they were and to try and get an idea of their potential. I like both. I was pleased against JC that they didn't quit...after falling behind 20-0, they fought back and made a game of it. It's a little frustrating to lose a game like last night, but still, we know we could have won by eliminating mistakes and capitalizing on our opportunities.

Didn't really mean to post that much...anyway, congratulations to P'burg on a well-deserved W, and good luck the rest of the season.

Did he take a year off from coaching in '07? :p

And don't forget '02 (of course, the Bobcats had everyone's number that year).

Those are the only two games I can remember Breathitt and P'burg playing this decade...:sssh::D

Boyd Co. is next look out. Maybe 0-3 start.

No way, not in a thousand years. IMHO.
