:cry::cry:Long time coach Farice Woods has passed away. He was battleing cancer for the past few years. Thoughts are with the family.

Prayers go out to the family and the hundreds of players he affected. I didn't know him personally, but I have heard alot about him from former players.

I hate to hear this. Trully a great basketball guy.

He was my grandfather, and was TRUELY a great man. He lived a full, happy life, and am gracious for your words.

 

He died at 6:30 AM on September 3.

He was a great coach. His basketball teams at Breathitt County in the late 1950s and through the 1960s were some of the best the mountains, and state, have ever seen. He took his 1961, 1962, and 1967 teams to the brink of winning state championships.

He is a great name in the history of mountain basketball. I never played against one of his teams, but his name is well respected.

He told me stories about how he played in the State Tournament against a team, and with 2 seconds left, the team inbounded it advanced it to the free throw line on the oposing side, launched the ball from 3/4 court, down by 1 before 3 pointers were counted, and made the basket to win and advance to the finals.

 

Another story was how he had the best team in the state hands down, and in the region his best player broke either his arm or leg, and they lost in the Semis at the state tournament. He went on and on with stories and I sat and listened. He will be missed.

 

But he loved education just as much as basketball, and I have been told countless times that he was the meanest and strictest prinipal that ever lived.

I remember his Breathitt Co teams. Great name in the sports and Education field, very well respected in both.

What a talent and an ambassador. He not only was a solid coach but his legacy is some of the great coaches he touched and nurtured over the years. If you look at every prodigy of his the list would amaze you. Prayers with the Woods family and a sad day for Kentucky basketball.

Mr. Woods was my high school principal until he retired after my junior year. I wouldn't call him mean but we took him serious and respected his word and authority (come to think of it I was always just a tad bit scared of him). We always heard stories about his exploits coaching and playing basketball and had to have our parents verify because we just couldn't believe it at the time. He could still knock down some free throws in the gym as well. I had several opportunities to play golf with him in later years at scrambles and get togethers at the club. He was a fine man and although I have good memories of him I hated to hear the news.

Farice Woods has his own Coliseum named after him here in Breathitt County. The Farice O. Woods Coliseum. He still made it to some home games and was always recognized on the PA system at some point during the game, often coming out onto the floor for a round of applause. I know that a few years ago he would still take a couple of minutes to visit the locker room and offer encouragement to the kids before a big game. After all these years, in Breathitt County Coach Woods was still "the man".
