I believe your larger schools do not do this as often. I know when I was at Rose Hill we had 5th and 6th graders playing on the 7th and 8th grade team. I believe your smaller schools have to for the numbers

I know several smaller schools play kids up because they don't have the numbers to field a team.

Is this the regular season for middle school girls b-ball or are these tourneys? NKY schools don't have games until the Nov/Dec time frame.

Thanks. Why do they start it before basketball season actually starts? Is there another sport that it conflicts with?

it is my understanding, that many schools move their middle school seasons so they do not conflict with the high school season. This way, they can move up players to play at Freshmen, JV, or even Varsity levels. many schools do this, Harrison Co and Mac Whitaker was great at this. His freshmen team consisted of soem 6th graders. When they were freshmen, they were ready to play at the Varsity level. I was at Mason Co when Chambers, Cline, Litzinger, and Reese were there. They were talented enough to play at the higher level and deserved that opportunity.

Many smaller schools have to go down and pick up 5th and 6th graders to fill the middle school rosters due to lack of players. It amazes me the number of larger schools that do it. You would think the larger schools would have enough girls to play. Is there just a lack of interest at the larger schools? I know in the Mason County area you have a few smaller schools that have to go down and bring up younger players, for example Deming, Augusta, and St. Patrick.

And the season is played before the high school season mostly for this reason.....the above high schools need 8th graders to fill their high school rosters. Two seasons ago Deming was starting two 7th graders on their varsity team if I remember correctly.

I believe you are mistaken.

 

In the 70's and 80's before Title IX, there was a need for gym space. Easy way to make gym space in the winter months was to move the girls' basketball programs, who honestly most did not care about, to the fall and get them out of the way.

 

That is the way it was for many, many years.

 

And then some interprising HS coaches began to see what a huge benefit it could be to their program.

 

The girls could practice and play at the MS level from August through Oct/NOv and then move up to the HS level and play/practice with the HS.

 

While the boys were only getting worked with from Nov through March, the girls were getting worked with from August to March.

 

Some boys coaches have expressed that they wish they had this setup.

 

What was a honest slam against girls' basketball has been turned around by the girls' coaches as a great blessing.

I believe large school is at East Carter, I could be wrong. I do not not where small school is.

Mason County 7th grade ran its record to 10-0 with a 51-16 win over East Carter tonite in Grayson.

Mason County 8th grade came back form a 10 point deficit at half to beat East Carter tonite. Injury happened late in the game for a Mason County player, hope she is fine. She was the difference in the game imo. 8th grade improves to 5-2 on the season.

Which player?

The Butler girl was brought up and played well for the 8th grade team. She took a very hard hit from an opposing player late in the game. I was not at the game but from what has been told the play was very dirty.
