Epic Text Message Fail? Media Gets Biden News Hours Before Supporters

Epic Text Message Fail? Media Gets Biden News Hours Before Supporters

Shortly after 3 AM on the east coast, the long-awaited text message from Barack Obama announcing Joe Biden had finally arrived. But it was something short of letting the cat out of the bag. At 10:50 pm on Friday night, ABC News confirmed that Biden was getting Secret Service protection. The first official confirmation that I could find came from CNN at 12:45 a.m. The promised "be the first to know" text message came a full two hours later.

What seemed like a brilliant exercise in media management devolved into a late night rearguard maneuver. All day Friday, the Twitterverse was on pins and needles waiting for their text message. (A number of us with iPhones probably jumped when we received one earlier in the day from AT&T promoting a software upgrade.) By 6 p.m., as the evening news cycle was closing, it was clear that no text message would come on Friday. The Obama campaign had kept the waiting game going for one more day. Again, seemingly brilliant.

But as Friday evening turned into night, it became apparent that the campaign was going to run into sequencing and logistics problems. Sure, the campaign could wait to send the message minutes before the nominee took the stage at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill. But that ignored the fact that the nominee had to get to Springfield. And with the media camped out in front of each of their houses, how exactly were they going to do that without getting noticed?

Add to this the fact that text messages are best sent during the day or evening hours. Many mobile apps actually prevent you from sending messages after 9 or 10 pm or before 7 am in a given time zone. With the West Coast included, this limits the ideal time to send a message until late morning in the east.

So, the 3 AM message seemed unplanned, a response to the media's confirmation of the Biden pick. A number of people on Twitter reported being awakened by the message, never ideal.

Who cares? If McCain actually knew how to use a cell phone he might have used this idea as well. Even if he knew how to use one, he probably wouldn't know which of his houses he left it at....

It woke me up at 3:28 am. As soon as I heard Senator Obama's Campaign theme song message tone come on I knew immediately what it was. Didn't bother me one bit that it woke me up. Also doesn't bother me that the media reported before the campaign did. That's the liberal media for you! ;)

I don't see what the issue is here.

If Obama cannot handle sending a text message, what makes you think that he should be running the country? The text message failure coupled with the stupid selection of Joe Biden as his running mate should cause even the most ardent Obama supporters to have second thoughts.

I could be mistaken, since I'm so young and uneducated, but I'm fairly sure being President and sending a text message about a VP selection are a little different...

 Really? That's what your going with here? Give me a break.

From what I can gather it has been well received on that side of the aisle. With the exception of disgruntled (delusional as well) Clinton supporters, I don't see anyone unsatisfied with the pick.

:thumb: You are absolutely correct! Sending a text message is a much easier feat. Maybe Obama was trying to prove that he could at least make a 3 AM phone call - but he proved just the opposite.

McCain and his supporters are very pleased with the selection of Biden.

Maybe. Maybe not. McCain will certainly give Biden heed when choosing his running mate, which also makes Romney's stock rise.

Biden's selection makes it even more likely that the Democratic convention will be a circus with Clinton's supporters raining on Obama's parade before it gets out the door. I agree, that prospect makes it more likely that McCain will play it safe and put somebody like Romney or Pawlenty on his ticket.

My first news of the VP pick...the text message. ;)

It's hilarious how the anti-Obamas hang their hat on this. I mean, p-lease...it's starting to sound delusional.

Can you not admit that a middle of the night text message that was so heavily promoted by Obama to demonstrate his high tech savvy and cool factor, and which came hours after the media announced Biden's selection did not achieve one of its main objectives?

Normally bad news is released late Friday afternoon by Democrats, after Rush signs off at 3 PM so that the story begins to die down by Monday morning. Was Biden's selection bad news? The timing of the announcement suggests that it was.

At least the announcement has overshadowed another potential Obama scandal - his continuing connections to the ACORN thugs.

As for the bolded, the anti-Obamas have assigned those motives and put emphasis on it or taken it out of context. The text messaging option was not heavily promoted, either. It was a communication tool that you could sign up for on his website or from the emails that were sent out to those that had signed up to receive them. I never saw any commercials or ads "heavily promoting" this.

I still do not think Romney is a safe pick.

The guy finished 3rd in the primary for a reason.
