I don't know that I would rank him as the top athlete ever, but whether or not people care has little bearing on his athletic ability. Although they receive very little publicity, he does compete in other events than the Olympics such as the world championships, etc.
August 17, 200818 yr As far as best athlete, how about Vincent Edward Jackson? You could make a case for him. First and as far as I know only multi-professional sport All-Star athlete. I'd dare say that had he concentrated on it, he would have been one heck of a track and field competitor. And don't get me started on his video game prowess.

August 20, 200818 yr Best Olympian. Best athlete is Thorpe, then Jim Brown maybe. Don't forget, not only did he win 8 this time (most in a sigle olympics), he also won three golds in Athens, to give him the most golds ALL TIME!! Not to mention he has at least a silver in EVERY single Olympic event he has entered. He can still go out and when more in London. Plus it's an event without judges, therefore, no bogus calls tha effect the result. Win determined by straight up time clock. Even sports like football, bball and volleyball are affected by judging, just like gymnastics. I'll worship any Olympian long before the Tiger Woods, Peyton Mannings and Koby Bryants of the world. They put in the work for little to no pay, not even knowing if they'll qualify. There ultimate goal only comes around every 4 years. Their reward is determined by the result they attain in their sports, the way it should be, imo.
