Opening Weekend

Featured Replies

I dont see anything wrong with it. We as in Breathitt play Johnson Central the first week so you know Mike Holcomb Athletic Complex is gonna be packed no matter when the season starts.

I like the new set up. I would actually like to see the KHSAA move the start of practice back/up, however you want to look at it at least a week. For example, Indiana doesn't allow practice to start until the 1st monday of August---this year it was August 4th(it's been like that up there for 20+ years). If the KHSAA did that, and opening night was Labor Day weekend, do away with the open week, but keep the same playoff format, etc., it would be great If all that was done, the finals could be played the first week of December and basketball could open it's seasonal play the following weekend (2nd weekend of December).

In saying this, I wish the KHSAA would extend dead period from the middle of June all the way through the whole month of August. It's getting to be a joke---these kids can't be what they really are, KIDS, anymore. I know some kids this summer who played two baseball games in the morning, 7 on 7 late afternoon and wrestling or basketball after that. If you need more than a month or 30 days to get ready for your first game, and actually NEED it---then you are doing way toooooooo much in my opinion. I know some footbally coaches who started their practices July 15th this year and are wishing they hadn't-----that is almost7- 8 Weeks before your first game---no need in all that. I know theres a bunch of 'rah-rah' guys that wont like hearing that---but, lets be honest with ourselves---if your team wins the state championship, I'm going to bet that it's not because of those 2 extra weeks of practice way back in the last two weeks of July.

The one problem would be if the Kentucky/Louisville football game were on Saturday night. You might see smaller crowds (especially bowl games that bring teams from further distances), since many would decide to stay home and watch the college game on tv.

Since the UK/UL game is on Sunday though, I don't think the new date will matter.

Football is pretty much a year round sport anyways-with speed training weights, spring games and mini camps (7 on 7) passing . Everyone is anxious to get started when July rolls around , then after about 3 weeks everyone is like can we play already? I think extending the dead period would be a good thing. I would never have thought I would say such a thing.::eek:

And you have to Wait till Saturday to be buried.

ROTFLMAO

Well said HCT...

I agree with most of what you said, but most teams have a scrimmage on August 15 and August 22, bowl game on the 30th and first game on the 5th of September - if you start practice on the July 15th - that's really just 4 weeks before a game type situation - not 7 or 8. KHSAA determines when you can practice in full gear based on your first game date. I agree too much practice before game situations is boring for the kids and not productive.

Why is there an "open" date on the schedule? I think doing away with that would help a lot also? Get your season over by the end of October and have playoffs in November.

I guess I'll be the contrarian to your post. I think each coach, not the KHSAA should determine how much time a coach needs to get his team ready for the first game. In some years, with a lot of returning experience, it may only take 4 weeks. But in years without that returning experience, more time may be badly needed if that team wants to win state. A good coach is the best determiner of what is the correct amount of practice time needed; definitely not the KHSAA.

And I don't necessarily agree that two extra weeks can't mean much in determining whether your team is going to win a state championship. Once the school year begins, the amount of time that you have to work on fundamentals is extremely limited due to homework demands, other school extracurricular activities and the need to specifically get prepared for the upcoming opponent. Show me the teams that have great technique and fundamentals year in and year out, and I'll show you the teams that put in a lot of time practicing.

As for the impact on multi sport players, we've debated that issue to death on here. I understand that having longer seasons for any one sport (be it football or basketball or any other sport) can create problems for the multi sport athletes. But should we put some higher emphaisis on multi sport athletes than single sport athletes that want to concentrate one sport? And if so, why?Me, I don't think so. Then again, I was a single sport athlete in high school and college. We may not like it, but the specialization of athletes in high school is here in high school, particularly at the larger schools.

Personally I think the key for multi sport athletes is for the head coaches at a school cooperating with one another to do what is best for the specific athletes involved. And if you have the overbearing football coach or basketball coach that does everything he can to discourage a kid from playing anything other than "his" sport, that's something that should be addressed at the school level, not the KHSAA level in my opinion. If a parent thinks a kid is being forced to do so much that it prevents the "kid from being a kid", well that's when the parent has to get involved and say, enough is enough, either to the child or to the coach or to the school board. Let's not use the KHSAA to do the dirty work for us. And if we really want to focus on where kids are being pushed too heavily, its in the youth leagues, not the high school leagues from my observation.

I believe the open date goes away next year. And you are right about their only being 4 weeks before the first scrimmage and for a lot of schools, before school starts and the amount of practice time is dramatically decreased.

Just my two cents-----and it's not even worth that. But, I dont really consider srimmages as "game like situations"---but, then again, they are. I've always considered them 'Full Contact Practice v.s another team'---and controlled at that---in terms of many scrimmages hold up on the QB, Special Teams aren't live, and I've seen many scrimmages where the coaches on both teams will stop to talk to their teams about particular formations----what to do here, there and so on---all for the purposes of learning. I've seen this with State Championship programs and the middle roaders. So, in terms of that, those who start practice the first day----in this case July 15th, it's a whole 7 weeks from that point until your first game is played. And, football is and always will be football---the team that blocks and tackles the best wins. That's never going to change. I guess Im just a fan of the old school way----do those two things to the extreme and well, have you 10 or so plays ran out of a couple formations and rep the crap out of them---play your base defense, mixed with a couple stunts and be disciplined on your reads, etc. etc.---then go win. I'm a Tom Duffy, Dudley Hilton, Joe Jaggers, Dan Haley, Mojo Hollowell, etc. kind of guy.

Keep in mind also that a majority of schools, the top football players are also the top basketball and/or baseball players as well---especially in your more rural, smaller county schools. I'm all for kids playing everything. I played them all in high school, then obviously settled on one in college for all 5 years. I wouldn't have traded it for the world------but, like the saying goes---'To each their own'.:thumb:

Good talk. Very valid points and opinions on many ends!
