Squirrel Season

Featured Replies

I killed 1 gray on opening morning and it was the only squacker I saw.

I just got back in from my hunt today. The weather was picture perfect and the squirrel's were active.( so were the skeeters) I killed 4 grays, 3 from the same tree (Hickory) and one on the ground and saw many more.

Heading back out tomorrow morning.

My youngun killed 2 grays Sat. evening behind the house. I made the mistake of going to pick up one and sent him after the other. I heard a shot and hollered at him, and he said "it was still trying to get away". When I got there, it was spaghetti with a gray tail. We had a lengthy "discussion:irked:" over the incident and I think he learned a valuable lesson,,,,,,,and so did I!

He is quick on the trigger like someone else I know.;)

I wouldn't worry too much Doc, once he starts buying his own shells he will be more reserved to take those follow up shots.

Congrats to your young hunter on his 2 grays!!!!:thumb::thumb:

I killed 3 saturday evening. All from the same hickory tree. My uncle had killed 2 from that tree that morning.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning. Nice and cool the dew was on the grass and there was a little wind in the tree tops. It was so nice, it was a success just being out in the woods, I could have fell asleep. I notice there was not a lot of walnuts nuts on some of the trees, So I just set under this big Oak tree. And then all of the sudden it started like raining, not rain drops, but acorn and walnut cutings and then it started getting loud like a family of gray squirrels was having a picnic. I started observing I seen 2 young ones and my mouth started watering. But I waited then 2 more moved in, I remained patient and calm planning my hunt and which one I would take out first and then second and hopefully a third. I raised my 22 caliber Winchester put his eye in the crosshairs and dropped the first one. Moved swiftly but quitely to my left and Nailed number 2, with the wind moving the tree tops they never realized what was going on, My grand pa taught me that. And then I focused in on number three crosshaired him but then he moved real quick as if he sense danger, he jumped branches on me I put a pretty good shot on him when he hit the ground he bounced back up in the air about 15 feet. That brought back some childhood memories of hunting with my father. Needless to say, I had me a nice little squirrel fry with alot of gravy and some string beans from the garden. Thanks Dad and Grandpa for memories!

Thanks for posting this story Pat. I love reading stories like this and on the tradition of hunting.

Midget has killed four. Couple more and it's gravy time! On a side note, goooooooooooooooood grief .410 shells are high when you buy high brass. I told him, don't miss, that's eightyfive cents a pop.
