August 11, 200818 yr Kinda ironic, a patient of mine (a very sweet elder lady) whose husband passed away recently called me on the phone and asked me if I would be interested in buying her husbands .410. Winchester model 37. Of course, I said I would. She was here this morning and I now own it. Or should I say, that my midget now has another weapon in his arsenal! I'm gonna have to fool around and get him his own gun safe. Edited August 11, 200818 yr by spindoc
August 12, 200818 yr They are nice. I've got my grandfathers 37 in 16 gauge. I've taken more squirrels with it than I can begin to remember. It was a retirement gift when he retired from the railroad many, many years ago. He's been gone for close to 20 years now. It's one of my prize guns.
August 13, 200818 yr Author Kudos to you for passing the tradition on. Too many of our youth today are getting away from hunting, fishing and the outdoor lifestyle that we were brought up on. You mentioned your 16 ga, single shot, that double barrel of mine was the gun that my dad handed to me when I was old enough to learn to hunt and carry a gun. I still have it and the memories, emotional ties along with it and his other guns that were passed on are priceless. The actual game taken is the least of the hunt for me, it's the things that money could never buy. Thanks for the lifestyle teachings Dad, I love you and we wil hunt and fish together again one day. My 16ga. was givin to me from my grandpa rip. I don't have the gun any more it was stolen when our house was broken into, but I still have the memories. I will never forget the days in the hills hunting with my grandpa. I never really thanked him for taken me out but I think he new I was and will always be thankful for him.
August 14, 200818 yr Hunting Will Never die In Fleming County. What else is there to do on a nice Saturday morning when theres no football or basketball? But it is on Saturday. Little varmits walk around in the leaves and it makes me think they are deer while im in the stand.:madman:
August 14, 200818 yr This should be a very good season. I have not been out but from what all I have heard there are plenty of Hickory nuts and acorns and the trees should be hanging full of them. Like I said, I haven't been out any, can anyone back this up?

If it sounds like a deer, it's a squirrel. If it sounds like a squirrel, it's a man. If it sounds like a man, it's a deer.

There also seems to be plenty of ticks.

I can't tell you the amount of times I have heard those sounds and they came to be exactly like what you described.

August 15, 200818 yr :thumb: The Oldtimers knew way more than we gave them credit for. :thumb: I know that I have said many times through the years that was a fact. When I was a teenager and still knew everything I thought (or I wanted to but really knew better) that my Dad was quite possibly was the dumbest man alive. Through the years and the older I got it was truly amazing how much smarter my Dad had become . Lesson for all of the teenagers and young adults..........You think that you do but you really don't know much of anything, listen to some of these people that you "think" knows nothing, you will save yourself some trouble (and embarrassment). I am not putting you down at all, I speak from experience.:thumb:
August 15, 200818 yr One morning bowhunting there was a squirrel messing around behind the tree where I was in my stand. I had looked behind me several times. He had gotten quite for a few minutes and then I heard him again. I started not to even look, but peeped around the tree and there was a nice 8 point just slowly moving along 25 yards out. Well he now hangs on the wall. Now I always take a look at any sound in the woods. You just never know.
August 18, 200818 yr My youngun killed 2 grays Sat. evening behind the house. I made the mistake of going to pick up one and sent him after the other. I heard a shot and hollered at him, and he said "it was still trying to get away". When I got there, it was spaghetti with a gray tail. We had a lengthy "discussion:irked:" over the incident and I think he learned a valuable lesson,,,,,,,and so did I!

I had that same kind of incident and was guilty of the same thing when I was a very young squirrel hunter. I would venture to say that my Dad had the same "discussion" that you are speaking of with me . That was the last time I did that.
