I'll be leaving tomorrow night for open house at the college. It should take a little over 3 hours to get there. Open house Isn't til Saturday morning but we're going to go ahead and stay in Louisville or J'Ville so we won't be so tired. Classes begin March 25th.

Welp, I enjoyed the trip and visit to the school. The part I am most excited about is that all my credits will transfer up to the school and I will enter in as a JUNIOR! The school seems to be in a nice neighborhood. We will have to go back up in a couple weeks to try and find me a place to live since they do not have housing on campus. Another surprising thing was the number of ladies that were there to check the place out. When you think of Morticians, most people wouldn't think of a lady doing it. In fact, I do not know of any female Morticians. Anyhoo, I am extremely excited about going to the school in March. I am still nervous about the whole thing but I'm ready for a change of scenery for a while. Just something new.

For some reason I just noticed this thread. I have a friend that attended this school. His family owned funeral homes back in Charleston, WV. His wife came to work for our company while he was in school. We have good family friends that own funeral homes here in Louisville.

My brother-in-law graduated from that school. PM me and I'll give you his number and name.

Just got in from the CVG Airport. I had to take a trip up there and pick of a deceased 26 year old man. The guy actually worked with me at the funeral home a few years back. I wasn't really friends with him since he was about 5 years older than me but I did respect him. He worked on the railroad in Texas at the time of his death. It's always sad when someone passes away but when someone who has their whole life ahead of them like he did, it hits home I guess. You just never know when it will be you're time.

Well, I'm here in Jeffersonville and my classes start tomorrow. I've been up here since Sunday night. I'm staying at a Day's Inn off of Eastern Boulevard until I find a permanent place to live or find a roommate which hopefully doesn't take long. I've not gotten homesick just yet as I am 3 hours away from home so yeah. I'm eventually going to find a job but I don't think I want to this first 3 months as I want to only focus on school. The classes I will be taking this 1st quarter are: Restorative Art, Accounting, General Psychology, Communications, Law I and Embalming I. The first class is at 7:30am :madman: :scared: and the last class ends at 1:20pm. That's going to be the worst part as I am not a morning person but in the profession it really doesn't matter if you're a night owl or a morning birdy, people usually don't pick their time to die. I mean it's not like their going to die between the hours of 9-5 so yea. It will be a rough transition for me but I can do it.

Since the last post I have met a dude from the school & we got an apartment together, saving him and me both money. We as a Junior class are 2 weeks away from finals for this first quarter and then we get a whole 2 weeks for summer vacation, lol. I'm not going to complain to bad though because we graduate in March '10 so I'm all for just getting it done and over with. BTW, for some reason, the air or whatever is so much hotter here in the Louisville/Jeffersonville area than it is in the mountains of southeastern Ky. I'm not sure if it's just actually hotter or if it's the humid or what.

When I graduate I will have 2 license which include a license to be a 'Funeral Director' and a separate license to be a 'Embalmer'. In the state of Indiana you can get both license at one time but in Ky you have to take 2 separate tests.

 

Being a funeral home director is not where the money comes from or even being an embalmer is not where the money comes from, the money comes from you actually owning the funeral home yourself which I plan on doing in the future.

 

The school lasts for a year and a half (they go in quarters which last 3 months). I enrolled in the school this past March but I was able to transfer my credits so I am now a Junior in the school and will graduate in March '10.

 

Once I graduate I will be working 9-5, yes but I will likely be "on call" say every other weekend which means no matter what time at night/day/morning I should expect for my beeper to go off, get out of bed and go do my job. Like you said, people don't pick their time to die or where they die. I could have to make a trip a mile up a mountain at 4 in the morning to pick up a 300 pound man by myself. I know that going in and am ready for the challenge.

BTW, the money is not worth the work you do but then again what profession is these days...I've worked at this same funeral home since I was in 8th grade (I am now 22) and this is definitely what I want to do with my life.

I would think your average mortician could wait until the service is over. Sure he's not actually the county coroner as well?

The coroner does not go on every death call so that point is moot.

 

If you are a mortician and you are "on call" you are the one who has to go and pick that body up in a timely fashion. Surely you wouldn't want you're loved one to lay there for an hour and a half (if the morticians pager went off at the beginning of the service or really any time) waiting on someone to pick the person up.
