In reading the BGP football preview I was a little confused about some of the final district standings. I was under the impression that the post season playoffs determined the district champ and runner up, not the regular season games. I thought that the regular season games were solely for the purpose of seeding for the playoffs.

 

Can anyone set the record straight? Thanks.

I was referring to last year and this is what I thought.

There's a regular season champion & runner-up, and a postseason champion and runner-up.

I've never heard of the regular season champ the past few years. Only the top seed. The second round winner was the only team taking home the district championship trophy. To my knowledge, there was no trophy awarded for the regular season top seed unless the school decided to buy one.

Don't know what to tell you. Warren Central got a regular season district title in 2006, and a runner-up trophy in 2007.

Because of the confusion, I believe the KHSAA honored both the regular season champ and playoff winner in 2006. I think only the second round playoff winners were recognized as the district champs last year.

 

Fortunately, the playoffs have returned to the old format so the regular season champ should be honored as the district winner. We also have true regions again, except in 6A.

And as HDE said, I think they'd have to go back to the regular season format again, except for maybe in 6A.

HDE is correct. In 2006 both were rewarded a trophy because of so much confusion. Last year, however, only the playoff winners were awarded the trophies.

Yes there were 2 trophies given. But I was under the impression that the district champ was determined in the playoffs.

I saw the negative of this the last two years in AA football. It seems to me that most on this post do not feel that programs that have success during the regular season, but

get in the playoffs deserve credit. I think it is an advantage many times to lose during

the season because in football the team that has lost is more motivated to win. Basketball and Baseball play each other numerous times. I really feel that by taking the top 2 then you eliminate those that have not fought to get there. Other wise there would be no reason to play the regular season. Looking at the post we might as well start the playoffs in August.
