But why shouldn't I refuse the breathalyzer? I already said I don't ever drink and drive. And we are talking about a checkpoint, not about being pulled over for suspicion of drinking and driving. Those are two very different situations. Why should I take a breathalyzer just because the police at a checkpoint ask me to?

Tell you what, you come up here sometime and I'll fix you one drink and I guarantee you'll feel the effect of that compared to one beer. One beer will not affect your ability to drive in any way, shape or form.
