St. X's Marty Donlon to step down

Marty Donlon, St. X’s head golf coach for the past 45 years, has announced his retirement effective June 1, 2008. A member of the Social Studies faculty, Marty has served the students at St. X for the past 45 years as a teacher or guidance counselor.

 

During his tenure as the golf coach, Marty led the Tigers to an incredible 18 Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championships and 9 State Runner-up finishes, along with 24 Regional titles. He has been named National Coach of the Year three times and was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996. In addition to the NHSACA Hall of Fame, he is a member of the Bellarmine University Hall of Fame (1986), the St. X Alumni Hall of Honors (1992), the Metro Area Athletic Directors Hall of Fame (2002), and the Dawahares/ KHSAA Hall of Fame (2004). Marty is the founder and director of the Kentucky High School Golf All-State program and has served as the KHSAA Regional Tournament Director for 44 years. He has also served in various capacities as a high school basketball coach for over forty years.

Marty is an amazing man. He will be missed in the high school golf coaching ranks. He holds records that no one will ever touch. Congratulations on a great career and have a great retirement!

I don't think assistant coach Jim Blanford would want to fill the shoes of his long time buddy, therefore, I don't have a clue at this time.

Cheers to Marty D. for his service to the students of St. X for the past 45 years. Wish him all the best in his retirement. I do have one thing to add that Marty D. taught me some 31 years ago, as he retires, "We will take you and work with you".......

Riverside, I graduated about 5 years ago and he is still using that same saying, but its still great. There is not enough that you can say about Marty Donlon. He is a class act in every since of the word. He has taken students that don't have a whole lot going for them and made them into outstanding young men with all the potential in the world. He has huge shoes to fill, and honestly, I don't see anyone filling them. I don't think there is anyone that can come close to his career, both on and off the course, and achieve the things he did.

 

My family and I have been fortunate enough to know the whole Donlon family for many years and they are some of the best people around. He was not only a great golf coach and teacher, but an outstanding individual and human being. And for anyone who is married or plans to get married...these are Donlon's 3 rules of marriage for men: 1. Your right 2. I'm wrong 3. It will never happen again.

 

Anyway, Congrats to Coach Donlon on all of his achievements and his outstanding tenure at St. X High School.

Marty hasn't change much in the looks dept either since I left in '83. Good luck to him and St X in the future.

 

A lot of these guys have been around for forever it seems, and there is quite a bit of "changing of the guards" lately, so to speak. Maybe, just maybe, those long tenures are the reasons X has so much success in 'most' sports.

Any ideas on who may replace Coach Donlon? Somebody is going to be walking into a gold mine!!!!!

My son played on one of his state champion teams. He is a good man and will be missed but I am sure someone will step in and keep the program at the highest level.
