Whitley County to get New Football Complex

Featured Replies

I was driving south on 25W about a half mile from the entrance (where all the road construction is, in front of the elementary school) to Whiltey County HS and saw a sign which was advertising a new football and soccer complex at Whitley County.

Rumors had been around for a little while but this is proof that the Colonels are getting a new stadium. And soccer too? What is wrong with the old one?

Details Please!!!!!

WOW! I have always been impressed with their current stadium. It isn't one of the best in the state but it has plenty of seats, great level playing surface and great accomodations. Not to mention this will be the third football field they have played on in the not so distant past. Their other field (middle school) is nicer than some varisty fields.

I believe that they are having to expand the high school which is going to interfere with the football stadium. I understand that they will spend huge amounts of money on the new stadium. Whitley Co. will spare no expense on their sports programs.

Soccer is overdue at Whitley, especially a girl's team.

Soccer is a long time in coming at Whitley, but it is coming and will have a great place to play. The new facilities will be top notch, with supposedly a new turf field that does not have lead. I think that the Old Colonel stadium was a great place to play, but this has been talked about as being one of the best playing sites in the state.

They have always had great facilities and it is great playing at Whitley and I am all for them to improve it more, but they will have to do a lot to be one of the best playing sites in southeastern Kentucky. Pike County has done tremendous as far as all their sites and then you have Letcher Central. Throw in Johnson Central and thats some pretty good company. Good luck Whitley and the Entire Southeast part of the State. Our kids deserve it as much as anybody!

Just how familiar are you with the Whitley County School System? The Supt. really goes all out for sports and wants to have the best stuff for his school sysptem. I heard today that they have already traveled all over the state looking at different schools facilities, from Trinity to Pikeville and are trying to take the best from all of them. I have heard that they are going to have TWO jumbo-trons, and artificial turf, all seat back seating on the home side. What does lead have to do with it, is it more expensive to have it? Williamsburg is building a new football stadium to replace their current one, maybe they are just trying to keep up with the Jackets.

The soccer thing is just too hard for me to believe, they have no feeder program and no coaches, when are they going to start it?

I really like the place they play now and it seems to me that they are wasting money that could be spent on other stuff, like Williamsburg is wasting money replacing the Findley-Legion Field/Rose-Stanfeild Stadium on the whim of their Supt.

Whitley has always had great facilities, need to get the athletic programs(Boys) up to the level of facilities

There was a recent study done on the amount of lead that is contained in the artificial turf surfaces that kids are playing on these days. Probably not more expensive only much safer.

The youth soccer league in Corbin always has a large number of kids from the Whitley Co. school system that play in it. They need to start at the middle school level and work up to the high school level...........if there is enough interest from the kids.

Hiring a coach would not be that difficult. They may have to hire a recent college graduate without experience, but who played at say Corbin, Cumberland or Union.

I dont believe that the Williamsburg facilities will be as nice or as grand as the Whitley facilities. Both Schools are doing this because they are spending money on "other stuff". Whitley has to move its facilities because of a addition to the current school building, Williamsburg is also planning additions that will take up what existing parking area they have. Therefore the facilities need to be moved before construction can take place.

I drove by the Whitley site today and they are already moving earth!:dancingpa

Whitley has some very nice facilities. I would have figured that they would have just build on the site of the current field and if need be, just play the upcoming season on the Middle School field which is as nice as most high schools. That way they could keep everything on campus.

What is the expected completion date for the new field?

The playing surface itself and stands should go quickly, depends on what else they plan on putting there, I am starving for more details.

Why is everything so quite around this project, I fugured they would have a big ceremony:sssh:

They had the Williamsburg Plans at homecoming last year. It is going to include a baseball, softball, and football field. I would assume that Whitley will spend more money on their project than Williamsburg will. I think most Williamsburg fans are sad that they are loosing their current facility, but updates are absolutley necessary.

I drove by the area for the new stadium. They have already cleared a major portion of the property, I wonder when we will get to see some plans for the sight. Man this is exciting times for football in the county.

With all the land that they are clearing it appears that it is going to a really large complex. Mr. Anderson is always looking to put Whitley County at the front of the line, and this complex is no different it would appear.
