Pitching to Luke Maile

Featured Replies

He didn't hit good at Conner... I believe 0-3 could be 0-2 but you see my point... No hard hit balls there.

Yea I'm sure most of the Colonels would like to forget about that Conner game. They were very disappointed after that loss.

Ok, we have the individual game stats covered... Of course the real issue is do you pitch to him? He is a tremendous talent that will one day have excellent opportunities at the Division 1 level and possibly Pro but this is high school and you pitch to him in almost all situations. There may be a time in a critical game that you may choose to take your chances with the next batter.

Speaking of him playing D-1, which schools are the most interested in him?

Consider this situation: runner on 2nd with 2 outs in a close ball game. Why wouldn't you walk him to take your chances with the next hitter (who may still be a very good hitter, but not the quality of Maile)? Sure that may seem like you are scared to pitch to him, but it is also a good coaching strategy. Baseball is a numbers game and in looking at the numbers, in that situation, I'd take my chances with the next hitter and not Maile. You see this happen all the time in every level of baseball.

In this situation, I walk him, especially now with him leading off. No offense to the kid hitting behind him, he is having a great season, but he is not Maile. Most coaches would say, "I am not going to let one player beat me". I am of that belief. But with nobody on base, just pitch him carefully and if he wins that at-bat, more power to him. He is a tremendous player and deserves every bit of praise he gets, although some of the homers on here do go a little overboard.

I couldn't agree more. I also feel that he handles himself with a tremendous amount of poise that is hard to find in most high school juniors. The kid gets so much hype but just from watching him go about his business on the field, he doesn't seem to let it go to his head. That fact can say a lot for his parents and his coaches, but it also just illustrates what a great kid Luke really is.

You guys act like your pitching to Barry Bonds or something most high school hitters have flaws and if you can make the right pitch you can get an out.

Major league pitchers had to pitch to Barry Bonds and his suppliers.

That is so very true, but of course he is hitting against high school pitchers, who usually make mistakes too, and those are the ones he hits and hits hard. :D :thumb:

From what I've heard, I think all of them. He really likes UK though. He has another year left, depending on how well he does, he may not see college.

And he's hitting against high school pitchers, most have flaws. It all equals out.

i had heard LSU was on his first choice.

Sorry OG...You beat me to it.

No biggie :D

I just wish those that question his ability, would just go watch him swing (remember he is just a Junior). I am not saying he is the best I have seen, nor is he a sure thing to make it to the MLB, but with his size, his hands size, his speed, his arm strength, his knowledge of the game, his ability to learn how to correct his flaws/mistakes, his pure love of the game, and his ability to express himself to the press, well the kid is indeed special.

Have seen him many times. And if he doesn't make it, I for one will be very suprised.
