I think it's more interesting (for fans and players) to play a team you hadn't played earlier in the season in the first round. That's why I voted "inter."

It probably does develop greater rivalries in district if you play intra though - unless there is little competition from district opponents.

Inter- top 4

Ugh! :irked: I voted wrong. Mentally delete one vote from 2 team intra and add it to 2 team inter.

The chances of a 4 beating a 1 are slim (though it does happen). However, with so many 4 team districts, it takes too much from the value of the regular season to have a 2 - 8, no. 4 team make the playoffs. Also, I like the idea of having to get ready to play someone new in the playoffs. I noticed this year that there was absolutely no excitement leading up to the first round. Here's the 2A first round games from 2007:

Class 2A Prep Bowl

Heath (4) (4-6, 1-3D) at Caldwell County (1) (7-3, 4-0D) 7:30C

Murray (3) (5-5, 2-2D) at Trigg County (2) (7-3, 3-1D) 7:30C

Monroe County (4) (2-8, 0-3D) at Green County (1) (10-0, 3-0D) 7:00C

Metcalfe County (3) (8-2, 1-2D) at Glasgow (2) (8-2, 2-1D) 7:00C

Todd County Central (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Fort Campbell (1) (8-2, 3-0D) 7:30C

Hancock County (3) (4-6, 1-2D) at Owensboro Catholic (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:30C

Fort Knox (4) (0-10, 0-3D) at Danville (1) (8-2, 3-0D) 7:30E

Washington County (3) (4-6, 1-2D) at Bardstown (2) (4-6, 2-1D) 7:30E

Owen County (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at DeSales (1) (5-5, 3-0D) 7:30E@Southern

Carroll County (3) (2-8, 1-2D) at Christian Academy-Louisville (2) (7-3, 2-1D) 7:30E

Morgan County (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Prestonsburg (1) (7-3, 3-0D) 7:30E

Bath County (3) (7-3, 1-2D) at Shelby Valley (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:30E

Newport (4) (1-9, 0-3D) at Newport Central Catholic (1) (9-1, 3-0D) 7:00E@Newport

Lloyd Memorial (3) (3-7, 1-2D) at Holy Cross (Covington) (2) (5-5, 2-1D) 7:00E

Knott County Central (4) (2-8, 0-3D) at Corbin (1) (9-1, 3-0D) 7:30E

Leslie County (3) (2-8, 1-2D) at Middlesboro (2) (7-3, 2-1D) 7:00E

I doubt there was much excitement around any of the 1-4 match-ups. I wouldn't mind knocking a week off the schedule.

That's the way I see it. How many number four teams beat the number one teams last year in the first round? I don't know the numbers, but I would say it was close to zero.

True, but how many 2 versus 3 games were very good games? If you cut out the 4 seeds what do you do to the 3 seeds? Give the #1's a first round bye or just cut the 3's out altogether. I have no problem with the extra week of playoffs, because there is always a 3 seed with a great chance to win their district. While most districts don't go 4 teams deep, many do go 3 deep with quality teams.

#4 over #1 in last years playoffs

(2a) Heath, (5a) Montgomery Co., (6a) Shelby Co. and Nelson Co. were all #4 seeds that beat the Number #1 seeds last year.

Number of #3 over #2 upsets by Class last year.

(1a) 3 wins versus #2s and 1 second round win versus #1

(2a) 1 wins versus #2 went on to Win Region (Metcalfe)

(3a) 3 wins versus #2s

(4a) 1 wins versus #2

(5a) 4 wins versus #2s and 1 second round win versus #1

(6a) 3 wins versus #2s

30% of #3's won in the first round

Thanks for the tabulation Jumper Dad. I, for the record, was only really against the four team playoff format when the first two rounds were within the district. Mainly because, the number four team, in most districts, was beaten by three or all the teams in the district, then had to play the number one seed, who more then likely killed them in the regular season.

But, with us now playing cross districts games in the first two rounds, four teams making the playoffs is not as big of a problem for me, personally. A four seed from one district could very well be better then a one seed from another district. Plus, the four seed players have a new hope playing someone who has not beaten them, and a mythical chance of winning some playoff games.

The big problem I have with 4 teams going is that every team in a 4 team district is in before game 1 is ever played, while teams that are unlucky enough because of geography to be in districts with more then 4 teams don't have that. Either scale it back to two teams per or take everyone. If there is a chance that a team can shoot a blank for the season and still make the playoffs then every team ought to be in.

I agree, I prefer two teams, but I don't have a problem with four teams now.

But, if they are going to have four teams from each district, I don't know why they don't just let every team in. It would only add one week on to the playoff format.

1A 41 teams, 32 make playoffs, 78% make playoffs, 9 teams not in playoffs.

2A 33 teams, 32 make playoffs, 96% make playoffs, 1 team not in playoffs.

3A 40 teams, 32 make playoffs, 80% make playoffs, 8 teams not in playoffs.

4A 36 teams, 32 make playoffs, 88% make playoffs, 4 teams not in playoffs.

5A 37 teams, 32 make playoffs, 86% make playoffs, 5 teams not in playoffs.

6A 36 teams, 32 make playoffs, 88% make playoffs, 4 teams not in playoffs.

223 total teams, 192 make playoffs, 86% make playoffs, 31 teams not in playoffs.
