If you talk to the Bwood fans it was a bad call, if you talk to the HC fans it was a great call. I know you know bball. I've played with you and against you throughout the yrs. You are very bball smart. But you know bball is bball and it is a funny sport. If Pickett would have tagged on the fly ball to left most likely it would have went into extra innings and with Cody pitching.........Bwood would have the advantage and probably walked away a winner. But some Bwood fans are sore winners as well as losers and we would still be hearing all the whinning.

 

I think that is the whole reason this "bad call" at the plate is even being talked about. Beechwood fans can argue about it but anybody that says that they did it to themselves is absolutely right. Pickett was not aware of the situation and starting running home on a fly ball to left, leaving him with no time to get back to the bag to tag up. I saw Coach Myerhoff getting in his face as he should of. I know these are kids and they make mistakes but when i saw that i was shocked that a high school player didn't know the situation in this big game. The thing that i was tought in high school when i was on 3rd was "ball in the air, back to the bag". I am sure coaches tell this still to the players. A mental mistake by the tigers cost them the game, but its not the end of the world, still over half of the season to play.:banana:

First of all for the umpires it is true that they can and some even do turn down games, but with this same rule coaches are allowed to turn down umpires as well if they want. But in the end if you want an ump as a coach then you get what is there. Now for the umps turning down games. I am sure some umps do turn down games such as some of the schools listed above, but is that wrong? I don't think so. They choose to do this to help out and get a little side cash, but they work the same hours as both you and I do, and then do this on top. So if I were an ump and been asked would you want to do a lesser schools game tonight, first off you got to think what time is that game? And on top of that with gas at $3.30 a gallon, is it worth my time even going over there to ump that game. Thats one of the reasons why there are such a shortage for umpires. Another is the fact that the "bullentin" posters and the "crowd" umpires along with the coaches give these guys so much greif night in and night out, simply put if it was such a great gig, then the fans who complain would be out there too, but they wouldn't be able to put up with the bickering.

 

There is a shortage of umpires and a downfall in the talent with them becuase of people just like the ones getting on here talking about them, imagine, if your hot enough to get on here and complain I gurantee you did at the game as well, would you want to deal with that after working all day?

 

Anyways, I dont think in my many years I have ever heard of a beechwood loss without its fans saying it was the umps fault, its never the players, and if they had good umps they would win every game. I mean really come on, if a kid earlier forgot to tag theres one of probably many reasons why you lost the game, so don't go pointing blame at a guy behind the plate.

I think you may have misread my post .I was not there and I did not say it was a bad call I am saying there are games where both teams leave a field knowing the umpiring was BAD .If you know me like you say you do ,you know I would tell it like it is .If it was right or wrong ,I'd tell you .I am not whinning and I did not hear alot about it last night at the frosh game .I do agree that a JV ump should not of been doing this game .The more experienced umps should have seeding games AND tourney games .For alot of A schools this is the only shot they have to compete for a title .Some cannot compete with the bigger schools .It should be treated like any important game .

I absolutely have walked away from games griping about the umpiring , but I say this all sincerity: I have never - not one time - EVER told my team that we lost because of the umpires. I will not ever allow the kids to take that attitude. At the end of the day, there are dozens of things that a team could have done better to improve their chances/win a game. The simple undeniable fact of baseball is that the rules are administered by a man that is a human being and prone to occasional mistakes. Some go against you, some go in your favor. They all balance out in the end.

 

It sounds like it was an awesome baseball game last night! I wish I could have seen it. It just seems disappointing to me that the focus after this game is not on the players or their impressive accomplishments or the game in general, but on griping about something that is very subjective and completely out of anyone's control.

 

I too wish I could of been there. I agree that many things could of happened to prevent the discussion. It is hard to just blame one person when there was other mistakes made. Best thing is, they live to play another day. We have always taught are kids the most important play is the NEXT ONE. Hopefully for all involved the next things will be executed better. And hopefully the bats come alive soon.

So what you're saying then is that the $3.30 a gallon is only a deterent when a "lesser" school's game is involved? Gas is cheaper when you're going to CovCath or Ryle? Or are you saying that being an unbiased arbiter only applies AFTER you've decided who you want to umpire? And I assume that working during the day, (which, by the way all coaches do too), is only a deterent when a "lesser" school is involved, correct? And from your description, only at "lesser" schools do umpires get grief from the stands?
