Just wondering about your comment about Ryle not letting Sophomores play varsity. Are you really certain that rule is solidly in place? Image the last two years Ninth Region POY Maile and Faris attending Ryle and the coach not letting them play as Sophomores? Do you really think that would happen?

 

Maile and Farris are no doubt unique players and if their clones show up at Ryle, then I assume an exception will be made. But, like it or not/believe it or not, for the past three years, only juniors and seniors have been permitted to try out for the varsity team. Wags class was the last one in which sophomores were permitted to play varsity. I can assure you that there have been and currently are sophomores that would could make varsity for them and any other school in NKY, but this is Roesel's decision and it seems to be working quite nicely for him to allow kids from this class level to get more seasoning at the JV level. I am very familiar with some sophomores now getting varsity playing time at CCH. I can assure you that no varsity exception would be made for any of those boys at Ryle. Not to say that they are not fine ballplayers - they are - but they would not see an inning of varsity time at Ryle.

Good points Old Guy. Wagner, Hughes, Murray and Humphrey all played Varsity as Sophomores and all were starters. I am only assuming that the sophomores right now at Ryle would not see considerable playing time at the varsity level. Why would you have a kid sit the bench up on varsity when they could get many AB's and playing time on JV level??

 

I would agree with this. There are currently some very fine ballplayers at the sophomore level - no Farris or Maile types - but kids that would make and start at just about any other NKY high school. Rather than have them move up to varsity and only play part-time at Ryle (and probably only in games against weaker opponents or in lop-sided games), the current policy is to have them remain full-time at the JV level. I wasn't around when the sophomore class you mentioned started at Ryle to explain that situation. Certainly part of it was that these were all very nice players. But since that time, the rule has been that no one below junior class even gets to try out for varsity.

This is a very interesting debate regarding Sophmores not playing Varsity in general. But as mentioned elsewhere in the forums, there are a considerable number of Frosh this year that WILL be playing Varsity next year. It's hard to predict a Maile or Farris at the Freshman level, but IMO there are so many Freshman this year that are playing JV & Varsity (or should be at the schools that do not allow Frosh to move up), that we could see a considerable number of top level baseball players coming thorough the pipelines.

 

Ryle will likely change next year I can't imagine the Hempel kid playing JV again, and the Friedel kid is one of the top athletes at any age group. Popham at Dixie started his 8th grade year on Varsity, and the group of Freshman at Beechwood will be getting Varsity time. NCC & Highlands has some very talented Freshman, NCC has Freshmen that could start Varsity now, but their team rules will not allow it.

They are very good ball players but unless they are thought of as being much better than or every day players at the Varsity level in their prospective positions they will not move up at Ryle (you also have to take into account time spent coming up through the system as a reward). Example: Logan Carney (sophmore), who by the way would start at a majority of other NKY schools. Ryle has Juniors that aren't playing positions that would start at most NKY schools. I know of one who tried out and made one of the top 18U summer teams as a every day position player who may not play an inning in the field at Ryle this year.

Both fine ballplayers that will wait their turn to play varsity at Ryle like everyone else (actually, I think Freidel will be transferring to CCH, so he probably does have a good chance to make varsity there). However, neither would start next year at varsity at Ryle - even if they were allowed to try out for the team, which they won't be. Besides the fact that Ryle's junior class is very deep - they are some very fine ballplayers currently not getting a lot of playing time simply because of the depth on this team - Ryle has some very good sophomores that would start in front of these two. But even as good as these sophomores are, they still wouldn't start on the varsity team right now, thus making their proper place to play the JV team.

Ryle has several junior players on varsity - Renda (P/3B), N. Murray (OF), and Meier © - who would start on just about every single team - if not every single team - in NKY. It's tough - and maybe not even fair - that this situation happens at Ryle, but I guess it speaks to the depth of the program. No, they don't have a Maile or Farris on the team right now, but they have an awful lot of dang fine ballplayers and just a ridiculous amount of depth.

BW was a little tight on pitching in the JV game with a busy week coming up .An 8 th grader ,Brilz ,came in and pitched 3 innings of the JV game. Has anyone else played a night game at CCHS ?The lighting seems to make it very hard to find fly balls .CC hit the ball well , do not want to take anything away from them .Just about 3 very playable fly balls dropped due to being lost in the night .Nick Shay is a very good player .He hit the ball hard everytime up .

Bertke pitched 3 innings the second game ,followed by M.Colosimo who also pitched well .
