St. Henry 59 Villa 56

Featured Replies

Sorry for not posting this last night. It was late.

1st Quarter: Villa Madonna comes out aggressive on the offense tonight as they take a 6-2 lead with 5:47 to go in the quarter. Stephen Love paces the Blue Lightning with 7 of the 15 total points in the quarter compared to Joew Swikert who adds 5 for the Crusaders. Villa Madonna takes a 15-11 lead after the quarter.

2nd Quarter: St. Henry wakes up a bit from the first quarter and holds Villa Madonna to 2 field goals in the second eight minutes. David Zumdick adds 5 points for the Crusaders and Blake Bryan puts in 4 points for Villa as St. Henry takes the lead at the 1:15 mark, 25-24 and the score remains the same at the half.

3rd Quarter: I’ve been waiting to see a team jump out in the 3rd quarter. I wasn’t disappointed as Villa hit 3 three pointers to re-take the lead and extend it to 7 points. The Blue Lightning pushed it to 9 points at the 4:11 mark, 36-29. St. Henry would not go quietly as a Derek Adams bucket cut the lead to 4 points with 15 seconds left in the quarter. That’s how the quarter would end as Villa re-takes the lead and makes a 4 point game, 38-34.

4th Quarter: St. Henry continued the roll they started in the third quarter as the Crusaders tied the game at the 3:50 mark with Joey Swikert’s 6 points in the quarter. Not to be outdone, Villa kept pushing back every time St. Henry got close. The lead would get no bigger than 3 points as St. Henry would answer. It came to a missed shot by Villa at the buzzer to force overtime as the score was tied at 52 at the end of regulation.

Overtime: St. Henry started off the overtime with Zach Dedden hitting a couple of buckets to start pushing the lead to 4 before Blake Bryan connected on a bucket to make it a two point game. Cameron Speed broke the back of the Blue Lightning by connecting on a free throw making the final 59-56.

The Blue Lightning end their season with a 15-14 record. St. Henry advances to the 9th Region semis against Covington Catholic on Monday night.

Scoring by Quarter:

Villa Madonna – 15 9 14 14 – 4 - 56

THis was probably the game of the night. Villa Madonna played their hearts out and it's a shame they couldn't pull out the W in OT.

Villa had a 7-10 point lead the whole game until St henry started pressing. Once the press came, it was all down hill from there. Villa didn't handle it well at all and that was all St Henry needed.

Steven Love and Blake Bryan are good players but IMO Love forces things up too much. I know he averages close to 20 a game, so I'd be interested to see what his shooting percentage is.

Villa left it all out on the floor last night and gave their community something to be proud of. EVERYONE, outside of St Henry fans, were pulling for Villa to win. Class act by the Colonel Crazies in cheering on Villa as well adn helping Villa's cheering section with some cheers.

I got there late in the 4th and Villa was winning by 3 points. I think there was like 2 min left. Now, isnt STephen Love Villa's best player? From the moment I walked in, sat down and watched the end of regulation and the full overtime I dont think he looked at the basket one time to score. Bryan looked very good on a couple moves to the basket but they looked out of gas.

They couldnt have drawn up the final play of the game any better though and once again I thought Love should have spotted up at the top of the key for the kick out off the missed free throw and the game winner. The dark haired kid had the guts to take it but if Love is spotted up at the top, he had time to swing it over to him for the winner. That boy that took the final shot looked hesitant and it didnt look smooth at all. It almost went in and you can bet pandemonium would have set in. I was just confused as to why Love played no part in any of the offense those final minutes.

Congrats to the Blue Lightning though on a valiant effort.

That play is a play that has to have all the stars and planets aligned properly to pull off. For those who weren't there: Free throw...down 3...missed the first of 2...TO to set up with 3(?) seconds left...shooter intentionally line drives the ball off the front of the rim...VM player does an EXCELLENT job crashing the boards and wrestling the ball out to the young man at the 3 line just above foul line extended....player launches a tentative attempt that comes an inch away from making him a legend! I really don't think the rebounder had "options" at that point in the game. Congrats to VM and to St. H. Nobody folded in this one!

I think you missed my point. I know the rebounder was the one that made that play and all he saw was Bilbo behind the arc on the wing. My point was, where was Love? He should have been spotted up at the top of the arc begging for the ball with hands out when Bilbo got that pass. Bilbo looked tentative and if Love is in that spot or even in his peripheral vision I think Bilbo kicks it to him and he has a better shot at draining it.

Are you kidding? He was going for ball in an "all out scramble". The ball popped loose was knocked to Bilbo, the only guy not in the pile up for the ball. He only had enough time to step back and shoot the best looking shot he had all night. It just fell short.

This wasn't a play were anything could be set up. Villa needed some luck and good look at the basket. They go that!!! How can you even question "where was Love" he was on the floor trying to get the ball so his team had a chance to win.

Love was not on the floor

Love was at of the three point line to the right watch him run in at at the end. Not saying that you could have set up a play to him. Great Game

Looks like Love was going to be on one side for the three and Bilbo was on the other. It just happened to go to Bilbo.

That makes more sense.

...I would have preferred the ball go to Scott Draud! Oops, sorry...different team, different era! (lol)

Did Draud have the three point line?

Ha. If the Villa coaches were old enough to remember Draud, I'm sure they would feel the same way. (Not saying Draud is old, just that all of Villa's coaches are in their 20's)

Or you could just ask Draud yourself. He'd have no problem telling you how good he was / is.

I believe he shot just under 50% from the field for the year, he seemed to be having an off night.
