Not before Pitino does. Personally I think every SEC school should retire his jersey for bringing parity to the SEC.

Diddo...

Honorary degree? What the heck is that? Did he take night classes while he coached? This is getting ridiculous.

Amen, kind of an insult to all of us who earned a degree from UK. He left the basketball program in ruins and gets an honoray degree?

As another person with a degree from UK, I am proud of this. This has nothing to do with basketball, and everthing to do with contributions Coach Smith had off the court. He could have never won a game at UK and still earned this. I'd bet the real Coach Pitino would agree with the decison to give Coach Smith an honorary degree in Humanities.

People criticize him, including myself, but he did a really good job at UK and deservers it. He is even a better person than coach also.

I guarantee you that Rick Pitino is very appreciative of the job Smith did at UK. Several people have done great things for the state that don't have honoray degrees from UK. This is a p.r. move period.

That wouldn't exactly make him Mother Teresa now would it?

Well deserved! Tubby did great things not only for the university but for the entire state! :thumb:

:thumb: Well said!!!!

Well that's good to know because if he did get it for his basketball accomplishments then UK needs to give Bill Curry an honary degree.

I must have missed all of his accomplishments off the floor can someone elaborate? I think he failed miserably as a coach so maybe I will feel better if I am more informed about all the other things he did other than his job.

:lol:That's pretty funny...

He has done a lot of great things off the basketball court for foundations, and just a bunch of things. I think you even know that, and just to be difficult...

And also he did not fail miserably as coach at all. However I do admit the last two years was not that great. Before that though he was doing a good job as the coach of UK. I wouldn't expect you to realize that though, because its people like you, who make people across the country hate UK so much especially the fans.

I tell you what I do know. I know that people have less of a hatred for UK now because they have been kicking our teeth in for the past few years and that is a direct result of the efforts of the honoray degree recipient.

If you look at UK's program today compared to 10 years ago then I don't see how you could possibly say that Smith was successful at UK.

Give me a basketball coach if UK wanted a humanitarian then they should have hired Sally Struthers.

But hey I have to be wrong because in the past 12 months UK has given him $1mm he didn't earn and now an honoray degree.

See the part I bolded is the part I talking about in why so many people across the nation hate us. Its that very arrogant talk that UK fans that act like what happened ten years ago is the norm, and we just have always dominated basketball every year. There is no way we could have stayed at that level. Even if the guy who your screen name on here had stayed, he wouldn't have been able to stay at that same level. Its really not that hard of a concept to grasp. We were going to go down from there a little bit, and we did that has happened to every great program. Honestly we still did better than most great programs have when they had gone down. The UNC's, UCLA's and everyone had went down so far that they were missing tournament and in UNC's case won 9 games one year I believe. The worst that we did under Tubby was a 2nd round finish.

We went down slowly after the 98 season, and then Tubby built us back up again, and was once again one of the TOP SCHOOLS in the country from 2003 to 2005. We went down a little bit the last two years, and I do put the blame on Tubby there because bad recruiting really hurt his last two teams he had. Yet still even when he had put his worst teams together, he still managed to have us as no worst than a 2nd round team.

I mean did Tubby do as good of a job as Pitino did while here? No he did not, no one is arguing that. I mean most people would have had a hard time doing what he had accomplished. However what he did, was make people like you think that 96-98 run was the norm when it is not true. It made you all blind to the fact that we actually did have a pretty darn good coach in Tubby Smith.
