March 8, 200818 yr I find it hilarious that so many people think something as silly as basketball is so important. Take away from the equation for a minute that Tubby is a basketball coach and just focus on what he did in the community, and you'll see (hopefully) why he's receiving the honorary degree. It has nothing to do with basketball.
March 8, 200818 yr See the part I bolded is the part I talking about in why so many people across the nation hate us. Its that very arrogant talk that UK fans that act like what happened ten years ago is the norm, and we just have always dominated basketball every year. There is no way we could have stayed at that level. Even if the guy who your screen name on here had stayed, he wouldn't have been able to stay at that same level. Its really not that hard of a concept to grasp. We were going to go down from there a little bit, and we did that has happened to every great program. Honestly we still did better than most great programs have when they had gone down. The UNC's, UCLA's and everyone had went down so far that they were missing tournament and in UNC's case won 9 games one year I believe. The worst that we did under Tubby was a 2nd round finish. We went down slowly after the 98 season, and then Tubby built us back up again, and was once again one of the TOP SCHOOLS in the country from 2003 to 2005. We went down a little bit the last two years, and I do put the blame on Tubby there because bad recruiting really hurt his last two teams he had. Yet still even when he had put his worst teams together, he still managed to have us as no worst than a 2nd round team. I mean did Tubby do as good of a job as Pitino did while here? No he did not, no one is arguing that. I mean most people would have had a hard time doing what he had accomplished. However what he did, was make people like you think that 96-98 run was the norm when it is not true. It made you all blind to the fact that we actually did have a pretty darn good coach in Tubby Smith. Direction of the program!!!!!!!!!!!! Forget about wins and losses and look at the talent level. The talent level is as low as the probation years and lower than at any none probation period in the pas 30 years. We had become Georgia or Tulsa, the job was too big for Smith he proved that by assembling a staff that was subpar and recruiting good not excellent players and then refusing to change his ways. If second round exits and 10 loss season become the rule rather than the exception then I have a problem with that. Does Bill Curry have an honorary degree from UK? He was a nice guy.

I had even admitted the last two years were bad years and I put the blame on him for that. Because he did a poor job of recruiting those years. But some of you like to act like he was just terrible here the whole time he was here, and THAT WAS NOT TRUE AT ALL. Other than the last two years, he had put very good teams on the court.
March 8, 200818 yr I'm glad they're giving Tubby this.... So am I because there is no way in the world he get this if he is still the coach at UK.

I never said they were terrible the whole time Smith was the coach. But the program declined under his watch, not just slightly but dramatically. I'm sorry but no matter how great a guy he might be his job was to uphold the standards of Kentucky Basketball. I personally think he failed. You guys know the drill, longest stretch without a final four appearance, multiple 10 loss season, seemingly lack of control off the court, etc. But enough about his coaching. What were the reasons for this honor? I'm not trying to be argumentative I just want to know what Smith did during his tenure that would earn him this honor that Bill Curry or Rick Pitino didn't do. Didn't Pitino establish the Daniel Pitino foundation that I believe is still active?
March 8, 200818 yr So am I because there is no way in the world he get this if he is still the coach at UK. Well no duh, they don't usually give honorary degrees to people while they're still at the university....

March 9, 200818 yr Don't think it fell dramatically! How about more 10, or more loss seasons during his tenure than had been achieved in the history of the program. Only time in history of the program when we wasn't on probation that these also happened in consecutive seasons. Dramatically? Maybe not. But looking at it in these terms, it was an all time low for UK basketball.
March 10, 200818 yr Don't think it fell dramatically! So do you feel it fell but just not dramatically?
