AverageJoesGym Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Hank Steinbrenner has provided his share of Boss-like comments in the offseason, his first as one of the principal leaders running the New York Yankees. He's made verbal digs at former manager Joe Torre and inserted himself during the contract negotiations with Alex Rodriguez, as well as the race for the services of pitcher Johan Santana. The latest, no doubt, will send Boston Red Sox fans into a frenzy. Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not. "Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. "Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order." http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3271124 Wow, I think maybe these two are sharing one brain. They're obviously delusional, I can understand their need to bash the Sox--they haven't had much luck stopping them on the field lately, but I can't believe they'd trash Torre.
stickymitts Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 What do you think he said that's incorrect about the "Red Sox nation"?

Alabama Larry Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 "Evil Empire"...but thats OK? Red Sox are all that right now, go ahead and crown them.

AverageJoesGym Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 What do you think he said that's incorrect about the "Red Sox nation"? How about this? "Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. "Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order." I've been to Red Sox games in Atlanta, Cleveland and Baltimore. At the games in Atlanta and Baltimore the Red Sox fans were just about as numerous and way louder than the home teams fans. There were also plenty of Red Sox fans in Cleveland. Actually take a look around when you're out somewhere, you'll find Red Sox hats and shirts everywhere. Are most of them bandwagon fans? Absolutely--but Mr. Steinbrenner is simply delusional if he thinks that with the events of the last 4 seasons that a "Red Sox Nation" hasn't developed out there. With the attention span of our society the Yankees past World Series Titles mean way less to the general public than the Red Sox last 2. Think of it this way--2000 doesn't seem like that long ago but as far as most kids from High School age on down are concerned the Red Sox are a much bigger power than the Yankees.
AverageJoesGym Posted March 1, 2008 Author Posted March 1, 2008 "Evil Empire"...but thats OK? Red Sox are all that right now, go ahead and crown them. How about what was said about Joe Torre? That bothered me way more than what he said about the Red Sox. The Red Sox have done their talking on the field, they're fine. Torre didn't deserve the shots that he took.

The first paragraph is DEAD on! As for the second paragraph, I think his point is that the "Red Sox Nation" is nothing short of a bunch of bandwagoneers. I wonder what percentage of the Red Sox nation were fans in the 80's...
Alabama Larry Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Yanks up 3-0 against the Cry Sox and Joe blew it by pitching ex sox Tom Gordon. Joe should have been fired the next day and look up my posts on here thats what I wanted. Too much talent the last seven years and all we got....heartache. I even have a tape of myself talking on the radio with Bobby Valvano and him ripping me about firing Joe. I liked Joe, but I love the Yanks more and we waited to long to make the move. Average Joe, we have had these conversations before haven't we?

It would be pretty hard to create a "Nation" of fans just because the Red Sox or ESPN wanted it--unless the Red Sox had done their part on the field. As for the bandwagon part, I'm sure that's true. However, if you look at it like that their weren't nearly as many Yankee hats running around out there until 96-00. :sssh: Success brings those type of fans--some of the ones wearing Red Sox stuff now might very well have been wearing Yankees stuff earlier. Steinbrenner comes across as a cry baby. They aren't used to having to chase the Red Sox and they aren't dealing with it well. Those poor, poor Yankees if only they got as much exposure and had all those advantages that the Red Sox had, maybe they'd have the same chance.....Oh wait.....:sssh:

Average Joe, we have had these conversations before haven't we? Pretty hazy memory there Larry. Yankee legend Rivera is the one that blew two saves in a row in games 4 and 5. Sure he was in a tough spot in game 5 but when you're the best ever....Also what Yankee fans like to forget is that Gordon had bailed Quantril out of a jam the inning before--otherwise their might not have been a lead to be held. Either way, he had nothing to do with the loss in Game 4 as he pitched 2 scoreless innings.
saint4 Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 This Steinbrenner is already starting to annoy me. He thinks his last name gives him respect immediately, but it does not. You need the resume of George to get respect.

Alabama Larry Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 Joe, Momma says its real "Hazy"... but I believe MR had to pitch what TG left him in three straight games. I know all the Yankee diehards are upset with TG. I remember ranting about the ex Sox that killed us. Where is TG today and where is MR?
