There have been studies that have shown otherwise. It seems to work in parts of Europe (Germany) just fine. The majority of people who use these drugs aren't a threat to anyone but themselves. And honestly, who's to say that the "bad apples" wouldn't be without the drugs. I still say you enforce the crimes that they may commit, but don't lock someone up simply for using drugs. It's the same with alcohol, it's perfectly fine to get drunk, it's not ok to get drunk and get behind the wheel. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it can't be kept under control. The legality of meth would do away with this. You wouldn't go through those dangers if it was cheaper and safer to purchase legal meth.

Alcohol is responsible for 85,000 per year, while all other illicit drug use, direct and indirect caused 17,000 deaths per year.

 

However,

 

Illicit drug use is associated with other things including homicide, motor-vehicle injury, HIV infection, violence, hepatitis etc. Tell me those type of things only affect the user. They don't, they affect others. Using illegal drugs is not just risking the life of the user, but people around them as well.

Most of the homicide related deaths involve the illegal transaction of the drugs, not the usage of the drugs themselves. This becomes a moot point if they are legal.

I also favor legalizing drug use for all adults. Then when people demonstrate that they cannot handle drug use responsibly, I would favor very, very long prison sentences for them that are focused on punishment and protecting society instead of attempting to rehabilitate drug abusers Ditto for adults who would sell drugs to children.

Your first point is pure speculation. Show me evidence, and I'll believe it.

 

On your 2nd point, more people get DUI's with Alcohol because alcohol is LEGAL and readily available. Drugs are not. While it can be easy to get them, not everyone knows where, or how.

 

HIV doesn't just go through needles. That person may get HIV, and go on and have sexual relations with many people and never tell them, because he/she doesn't want to or because he/she doesn't know. Doesn't just go through needles.

If someone has ZERO money, they have ZERO money. That means it does not matter how cheap something is. You can find ways to purchase prescription drugs even if you do not need them, but you still see people breaking into pharmacies around the nation don't you? It happened to a pharmacy right next door from me...

Great if we follow those methods we'll all be building houses on top of [risons, and all of our schools will be next to prisons. The fact that most prisons in California already hold two times as many inmates as they are supposed to hold is just crazy. They are going to have to build more prisons soon, or they're going to have to stop arresting people and putting them in prison for life for stealing 4 chocolate chip cookies.
