Dixon is a great down low player. I've been saying that all year. She probably helped Walton the most from any girl this season, IMO. And yes, Moss didn't score as much, but Moss did a lot more than just score for Ryle. She played solid "D" on Dixon, making her miss many many lay-ups, and rebounding the ball a lot over WV players. She (Moss) will be a force in a few years in NKY. Moss made pretty much every shot she took and could have scored at will, but just played unselfish basketball, which is a great quality in a young player to have, but she had her way in this game. Dixon seems to dribble down the floor and miss-handle the ball, which results in TO's.

 

Side Note: Excited to see how Dixon plays in the next few years! She will be special too! Anyone know Walton's rebounding record?? Think Dixon could catch it?

 

And for Walton's weak side rotation, that's hard to do in a man to man "D" It's hard for somone to drop that low so quickly and even harder for girls to do it. All I am saying is that you could tell that Moss was above the rest. She is special player.:jump:

 

Again, you saw a different game than I did. Dixon 18 points 17 rebounds. That is not getting "eaten-up" by anyone. I went to the WV game expecting to see this great player (Moss) that everyone has been telling me about. I watched, I thought she was a solid varsity player, and for an 8th grader that is quite an accomplishment, but I was not blown away. Maybe it was because they rolled on WV and she did not have to be spectacular. The one thing she did that impressed me was her court vision. She needs to work on her ball handling a great deal. she is a good passer and has adequate low post skills, but nothing impressive. Her being left handed gives her a huge advantage and I am sure she will be a player to watch down the road. BUT, right now, I would rather have Dixon on my team. She is stronger, runs the floor better, works harder on defense. She finishes well around the basket as does Moss, but has far superior post moves.

 

Again, this is based on the WV game. I have seen Dixon play several times, but this was my first time watching Moss. Maybe it is because of all of the hype I was expecting more., maybe it was because the game was a blow out. I will have to watch her play more.

I think that is a little harsh. Coach Burger, the JV Coach, has a lot of experience and knows the game. She also seems to be a very loyal person. Loyal to her players and to the head coach. I am sure she is not going to do anything to make the head coach look bad. She is not going to deviate to far from the system that is in place when she is filling in for coach Rosen. I am sure she did her best implementing the offensive and defensive gameplans that were put in place throughout the week by Rosen. Just because she is the bench coach does not mean that she is in complete control of every aspect of the game.

 

As far as the JV success goes. I think they have done a nice job of getting girls ready to play next year. Isn't that the goal of the JV coach/team. I didn't know that wins and losses at the JV level were the be all and end all of high school basketball.

 

 

I will not argue that she is a loyal person. My grandmother is also a very loyal person, but in no way does that make her a great basketball coach. Not once in my post did I say that the JV coach was a bad person. All I'm saying is from what I've seen in the JV games is that her coaching abilities are very limited. As far as keeping to the varsity coaches game plan, I can see your point on that, since the varsity has been extremely successful this year.

 

Let's don't loose sight of the big picture. These young talented players will not do squat with out quality leadership at the JV and Varsity level.

Agree to dis-agree! I guess we saw different games! Just seeing an 8th grader play in a varsity game, and make teams double down on her, and pass out of a trap and see the court so well for such a young player, impressed me. Trust me, I bet if the game was close, you would have seen more of Moss. She scored only 12 points, but gave Ryle about 30 points with great passes and great outlet passes. She must have been good if Walton kept doubling her, right? Just IMO! It was fun seeing two girls, young girls battle down-low. Dixon and Moss will be fun to watch in the next few years! :jump:

I couldn't agree more, but I believe that the leadership comes from the top down. A JV coach has an important role to play, but being the leader of the program is not it. Any JV coach thrust into having to coach the varsity team due to the head coach being out is in a lose-lose situation. If they stick with the head coach's game plan and lose, everyone will blame the JV coach, if they deviate from the plan and win, are they showing the head coach up? If they deviate from the plan and lose, did they go rogue and cost their team the game. Given the circumstances I feel bad for Coach Burger.

Not sure if you are arguing against me or with me. Are you saying the WV coaching staff has done a good job of getting the younger girls some experience and in getting them ready for the varsity level or not. I am saying the quality playing time Dixon, Ginn, and Cheesman have gotten at the varsity level and JV for Ginna nd Cheesman this season when all of the pressure was not on them will help pay off down the road.

 

And as far as Dixon getting "eaten-up" down low by Moss, I am not sure you saw the same game I did. It appeared to me that Dixon had Moss under control, theat the weak side post rotated over to help, and that the weak side wing did not rotate to the weak side low post and Moss found the open man. Seems like a problem in the defensive rotation and for the weak side wing, not a question of Moss "eating-up" Dixon. Actually I think that Dixon outscored Moss 18-12, but I could be mistaken.

I do know, I agree. I agree with what CatsPride is saying but also have my opinion on it. I like what their doing, but also think that JV is good for girls and even boys. Helps develop skills. Only time will tell to see how things go, right?

Interesting observation. I am not a parent of anyone on the team, but I know that there are people there that I do not want to sit by because I would have to worry about everything I said. Maybe some of the parents feel that way as well.
