Obviously, I'm rooting for all Trinity wrestlers, but I can't help but root for this kid as well!

 

For a brief moment, Daniel McCoy is different. His arms extend in front of him, and instead of touching air, his fingertips graze the outstretched hands of an opponent. By rule, he must do this before every match.

 

As soon as the whistle blows, his opponents realize the 112-pound senior from the Kentucky School for the Blind is the same as any other opponent.

 

"I'm no different from any other wrestler," McCoy said. "I don't want you to go easy on me."

 

McCoy is totally blind in his right eye, and the vision in his left eye is 20/700, meaning McCoy has to be 20 feet away from what a typical person can see from 700 feet. But after just two years of high school wrestling, McCoy has become a state-tournament qualifier.

Back in 1996 my friend Tendai wrestled a kid from the KSB in the regionals at Western High School....it was amazing to see his skill, Tendai won however, he was the best wrestler I ever saw.

Daniel McCoy won a match at the state tournament and wrestled very well.

Seen a kid at the elementary tourney at Johnson Central that had no arms and legs, and was wrestling. I thought that was awesome, I think he was from Bourbon Co.

Very impressive story.

Letcher County Central has had a special young man without arms and legs wrestle on the varsity team for three years.

He was an inspiration to all.

Couple of years ago, I watched a boy who was missing 3/4 of his arm wrestle his way to the Minnesota state championships. I think he was in Divison 2. Really amazing when you consider how intense of a sport wrestling is in that state.

He finished 2nd.
