Trade looks to be all but finalized now.

 

Kidd, Malik Allen, and Antoine Wright to the Mavs for DeSagana Diop, Devin Harris, Maurice Ager, Keith Van Horn, Trenton Hassell, two first round picks and cash.

 

Van Horn has agreed to come back and play for the Nets to make this trade happen.

I'm actually excited about the trade now. Not because it finally went through or because I'm a fan of the Mavericks, BUT because I got a 2 dollar ticket to see the Mavs play the Knicks in Dallas March 10th. I will be in town for a convention that weekend. My flight doesn't leave til Tuesday morning, SO I will get a chance to go to the game Monday night.

 

I guess Dallas has these promotional nights where you can actually get a 2 dollar ticket, VERY limited and I got one! :banana:

 

Anyway, back to the trade, Dallas doesn't have enough in the paint to get it done. Course their heart has been questioned more than a few times as well.

Well, both Phoenix and Dallas have mortgaged the future for the chance at a championship this year and next. One of them is going to come out looking like a fool...

 

...or both. I'll still take the Spurs or a healthy Lakers team over Dallas or Phoenix in a seven game playoff series.

 

I like the Phoenix trade for Shaq because his impact will be felt more in the playoffs where the Suns' style always flamed out...adding Shaq makes them better equipped to succeed in the half court and defend the paint which is a must in the playoffs.

 

The Kidd trade is the opposite, IMO. Forgetting future concerns like Kidd's age, Harris' youth, the draft picks, etc...I'm not sold this made Dallas better now. I'm almost 98% sure that they'll be less prepared for playoff basketball...they're going to miss Diop and the minutes he gives in the paint with his defense and rebounding in particular. Also, Kidd is at his best in an open court up-tempo game, and the playoffs usually don't go that way. Kidd is a great player, no doubt...but, I think the Mavs lose a lot defensively trading Harris for Kidd. Harris was young, quick and athletic...I have doubts about whether Kidd can keep up with the young and explosive PG's in the west when he has to defend them. Harris had the ability to do that. Those two things are going to weaken Dallas defensively in the playoffs and ultimately be their undoing.

 

I suspect they'll get a boost from Kidd's addition and possibly go on a nice run for the rest of the season. I would caution people not to judge the result of either of these trades until we see their impact in the playoffs...it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Dallas played better than Phoenix during the rest of the season only to see the reverse happen in the playoffs. We'll see though....personally, I don't think either team will win the west. I'm going with Los Angeles or San Antonio.

Agreed on all accounts except Kidd is probably an upgrade defensively. People don't give him credit for that. I am still going with the Spurs as well.

He can make plays defensively...create some turnovers, get some steals, and is a pretty good team defender. However, in a man-to-man situation, I think they downgraded...Devin Harris matches up far better defensively in a man-to-man situation with guys like Tony Parker, Chris Paul, Steve Nash, Deron Williams, etc...IMO. In the playoffs, that's a huge factor...if you can't contain the opponents PG, it breaks down your whole defense.

 

I may be wrong and Kidd may prove to be better in that regard than I'm giving him credit for.

 

In short, I liked the Phoenix deal...I think it gave them a chance to win a title if things work out well. I don't like the Dallas trade...they sacrificed young talent and draft picks and they still won't be good enough to win it all, even if things go well, IMO. I think the team Dallas has now is more like the teams they had with Nash (or like the Suns before Shaq)...they're going to be a team that thrives offensively in a fast paced game, but will likely struggle in the playoffs when the intensity goes up and they're forced to play in the half court more.
