Ward is a free agent and I bet the Giants don't do much to retain him. Kiwanuka is different because of the Strahan situation; he will be gone soon, so you keep Mathias around.

You like Wilkerson a lot more than I do. I will only say that I am sure that if Spagnolo thought Wilkerson was good enough to start in his system, he would have gotten more playing time this year than he did. When Kiwanuka went down, Torbor got the playing time, not Gerris. I think that says something about how he fits this system.

Good TEs don't burn the Giants, good systems in which all of the passing options are utilized correctly hurt the Giants. Watson didn't hurt us during the Superbowl. Neither did any TE during the playoffs. I would think the Giants would try to avoid trading Shockey in the Division, but you can't eliminate trade partners in a conference; you have just eliminated ever doing business with half of the league.

If Shockey went to mini camps this year, then I am sorry. He has not attended mini camps in 5 of the 6 years he has been in the league. He doesn't get a pass on saying stupid things simply because it was his second year in the league or becuase it was after a loss. How come Strahan manages to keep his composure? How about Amani? How about Eli? How about Brandon? They all manage to avoid this type of negative attention.

I actually love Shockey. I just don't see why we wouldn't explore all options. Our depth at TE is much more easily replaced than depth at LB, which will be an issue next year, or depth at the secondary positions, which could have cost us this year. Boss is a younger and cheaper option that has provided great results this season. Give him the job and lets see his growth (I think his potential is much greater than Gerris'). We can sign a Jermaine Wiggins in the off season to add TE depth if need be.

Jerry Reese will make the right call and we'll see what happens, but I would not be surprised to see Shockey traded around draft time, or to hear the Giants are renegotiating his deal.

The Star-Ledger is reporting that the Giants have begun negotiations with HB Derrick Ward, who is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. The sides are supposedly discussing a 3- or 4-year deal.

Wilkinson doesn't play the same position as Torbor. Torbor was 2nd behind Kiwi at SAM and Wilkinson was 2nd on the depth chart behind Mitchell for the WILL.

Good tight ends have hurt the Giants particularly early in the season. No one passed on the Giants in the playoffs, so that's why the tight ends didn't hurt them.

Brandon Jacobs has said some stupid things before. Shockey was a 2nd year player and if you want to hold that against him four years down the road, so be it. However, I choose to forgive him since he's done nothing too bad since then. He's a fiery player and he's good for any team.

Aside from Shockey, we have TWO ROOKIES. Michael Matthews and Boss. Boss has been good, but not great. Boss in 7 games where he started or had significant playing time had only 208 yards receiving on 14 receptions with 2 TD's. That's good, but Boss is not nearly the blocker Shockey is and as much as you might want to believe it, he's not even as good of a pass catcher.

Reese will make the right call by doing nothing with Shockey. He's not going anywhere, guaranteed.

BTW for all of you Shockey haters out there, it was reported on ESPN radio that...

Shockey came to Arizona against team orders with mother, wasn't allowed to sit on sideline. Ordered not to attend parade because of injuries.

To me, this sounds like the Giants staff didn't want him around.

He was ordered by Doctors not to be on the sidelines because of his injury. Has nothing to do with the staff not wanting him around. As much as you all want to believe there is a conspiracy here against Shockey, there isnt.

You said 'team' orders in your previous post, not 'doctor'. Therefore, I assumed you were speaking of the president/gm/coach.

The team has doctors that work for them too ya know.

As it was, I don't think he was feeling any pain during the Super Bowl.

If Blauber can weigh in on Shockey...

Then so can I. We'll have a web story and one in the paper on the Shockey subject, and here's the key part for now: Jerry Reese emailed me this response to a question about whether the Giants are shopping Shockey:

"He is our starting tight end."

I'd say that stands pretty well. Shockey is still a valuable player, especially as a blocker -- I think Kevin Gilbride could be pretty excited about the two-TE sets with Shockey and Kevin Boss for next season, especially since Boss has proven to be a very good pass-catcher and an improving blocker. Could be some very good decoy plays run out of those sets.

Shockey's salary is manageable, the whole experience of being apart from the team during this championship run could make him more manageable as a person and he's still a Pro Bowl-caliber player.

Personally, I think Shockey and Eli will both have a HUGE year next year.

They need to meet more in the offseason to be able to pull that off.

Not necessarily. Plaxico had a big year this year considering the injury he played through, and he works out in Miami as well.
