Head Coaching experience is a plus, but no always the best choice for a program. Someone who can bring energy and excitement and get kids involved is something we need in Owen Co.

 

Bengal, You are right. The AD from Henry was on the committee. I whole heartedly disagreed with that choice. Why would he (a conference foe) want to pick a good coach for us. I'm not saying he is a bad guy or anything. I like coach Gilley. I agree that he will not ask someone from Owen to be on his next hiring committee.

I thought the one who told me was being sarcastic, but apparently he wasn't. I feel for you guys over there. Looks like your principal may be in the wrong school district. She may need to go back home.

I think the principal's hands have been tied to hire a coach. No positions until recently. I think overall, she has done OK.

It is quite obvious her loyalty is NOT to your kids or even to your community. That is so sad....Looks like you all need a total readjustment over there. Not just with your football coach..

Just because somebody plays college doesnt mean that they can coach. Second, K-State is not a mecca of coaches. My point is he coached whatever at Kstate for 3 years and thats it. Whether or not Bruce jones is the right guy, he has more years coaching as a head coach than this guy does combined. Anyway, no reason to waste my tme because you all know everything anyway.

 

You are right. Just because someone played college ball and coached at the college doesn't mean they can be a successful coach at the high school ranks. However, seems to me that someone with that much experience would have a great deal of knowledge for the game. And honestly I would venture to guess that since Hilton is a ref and and an ump that he has decent people/communication skills to go along with his knowledge of the game. Both knowledge of the game and good communication skills are key ingredients to the start of being successful. Anyway, what's it matter if Jones has more head coaching experience or not than Hilton (or Fowler for that matter). Look at the guy that coached Owen last year. If I'm not mistaking he didn't have any prior head coaching experience (unless it was Youth League) and Owen still hired him.

Very true playmaker. Hockensmith didnt have any head coach experience, but also did not fair to well. I could care less who they hire, "and I dont think Bruce Jones is a great coach" but I also dont think Hilton is either. I really dont think the administration cares who they hire or how much football experience they have. Any really good coach would have probably pulled out due to them waiting so long.

I would have never questioned it until I heard she herself was from Henry Co. I have heard that she has done a ok job as principle. If your going to get an AD from another county on your athletic committee for hiring a new coach.....wouldn't you stay away from your rivals? If I was a parent or a kids that played football over there I would be questioning that and soon. Don't know much about this Fowler guy, I just hope that they haven' drug their feet so much over there that the kids are discouraged. That would not be good for whomever gets the position.

Heard Hockensmith did do a lot of work on the locker room over there this past summer. Sounds like he was a nice guy and loved the kids, maybe he just wasn't ready for that position at that time.

Has anyone heard who they hired as coach? Wasn't you interviews done on Friday?

Todd Gilley is a fine person/coach...but I agree. Who has a rival AD on their hiring committee? Additionally, does Gilley have any football expertise? I know him only as and AD and basketball coach.

From what I am understanding from a few parents I don't think any of them had any football experience on the committee. Maybe two played high school. Gilley is a very nice guy or seems to be, but why put someone from another county (tht your team plays) on your committee. I could see Trimble County asking someone from Gallatin or Carroll being on a athletic hiring committee for a job. You would be laughed out of your county....or kicked out. Unless I have missed something..(Is this how school districts do it now? Get another AD from an opposing county to help hire their coaches? Maybe I am missing something.) If I was still over there and a parent or a student for that matter. I would be throwning out concerns right and left.

Just got word that Owen has named a new head coach. Not for sure who it is, but I will be making some calls and get with you shortly.

Adam Fowler don't know much about him. Does anyone else?
