Big 10 Legit??

Featured Replies

What do they need to do to become more legitamate in football? Obviously, recruit more speed. I also say they should bring in Notre Dame, so they have 12 teams and can have a conference championship game, like the legitamate conferences. Any other suggestions?

Play and BEAT some OOC teams from the other power conferences.

I say bing ND in. And don't play teams like Akron, Youngstown state, and Kent state. (For thier OOC schedule.)

As opposed to Western Carolina(1AA)(2), Houston, Louisiana-Monroe, Troy(3), Chattanooga(1AA), FAU(3), New Mexico St., North Texas, Tennessee Tech(1AA), Western Kentucky(1AA), Kent State, Eastern Kentucky(1AA), Middle Tennessee, Tulane(2), Louisiana Tech(2), Memphis, Northwestern St.(1AA), UAB, Gardner-Webb(1AA), Louisiana-Lafayette(2), South Carolina State(1AA), Arkansas State, North Carolina, Richmond(1AA), Eastern Michigan, or Miami of Ohio???

Let's not make this out like the SEC is going out and scheduling world beaters across the board. Each SEC team has approx. 2 of these teams on their schedule. There are 9 1AA teams that I counted played a total of 10 times. Most of the rest of the games are against the enitre Sun Belt conference (Ark. St, FIU, FAU, La-Lafayette, La-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, Troy, North Texas). Those names don't exactly strike fear into the hearts of schools in the SEC.

National Champion LSU's OOC schedule

Va. Tech

Middle Tennessee

Tulane

Louisiana Tech

Ohio State

Washington

Youngstown St.

Akron

Kent State

You guys make it sound like the SEC has murderer's row lined up for their OOC schedule. 1AA teams and the Sun Belt certainly aren't that.

I hate when the MAC doesnt get the respect. Have they been world beaters the last few years??... No, but for a 4-5 year stretch they were always beating SEC, Big Ten teams etc.... I dont think scheduling MAC teams is bad for a power house school. They dont put MAC schools on the schedule b/c IMO it is a trap game for them. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there.

The SEC may not have a murderer's row of OOC games but at least they do play (and more importantly beat) some good teams. The Big 10 as a conference played almost nobody out of conference. Here are the Big 10's OOC wins against 2007 Bowl Teams before the bowl season began:

Illinois and Indiana defeated Ball State

Michigan State defeated Bowling Green

Northwestern defeated Nevada (who finished 6-7)

and Purdue defeated Central Michigan

That's it, all of the wins save Nevada were against MAC teams and Hawaii's public humiliation showed how tough WAC teams are. That is MUCH weaker than the SEC's performance.

No disrespect to the MAC but when an the best team that an entire BCS conference plays and beats in their OOC games then their OOC schedule strength needs to be improved. The MAC schools have some good players and coaches but they really don't have BCS type speed or depth--particularly depth.

The Big 10 needs to win the BCS title again. It is that simple. They can play whomever in the non-conference, but without the BCS title, the criticism will always be there. It would be icing on the cake if they could take out the SEC along the way, but if Ohio St. can get back next year and beat Oklahoma, or anyone thrown their way, the criticisms will cease.

Va. Tech was in a major BCS Bowl. You need to put in some weaker teams when you play a murder's row of 8 SEC games.

Would somebody bring out the dead horse.

We understand, The last two years the Big Ten has been Weak. We understand that the SEC is the best football conference and has the most speed. Notre Dame is not coming to the Big Ten. Why should they, they have the Sweetest deal of any football team in the country. (TV, Alumni, Qualifing for BCS)

The only reason we have conference championship games is money, money, money. College football teams are to be rewarded for playing well ALL SEASON LONG.

Yes we all agree as has been stated a gazillion times before, Ohio State's OOC schedule this past year sucked, stunk, was horrible, etc. I promise you It is going to be better for the next 8 years at least. See previous posts on this subject to view the list of teams that are on future OSU schedules.

Ohio State will always have a MAC team on the schedule. This year because of the addition of the 12th game that was implemented just a couple of years ago, they were forced to add another game and the best they could do was a team from the MAC. Are MAC teams the toughest possible opponents? NO, but they usually play tough and put up a good fight. If not mistaken UK has had their troubles with MAC teams in the past.

Kids at MAC schools usually have a chip on their shoulders when it comes to playing some of the bigger schools because they might not have been recruited by those schools.

Any way, I have gone on too long. I personally love Big Ten football. I also love SEC football and right now the SEC is best football conference. The Big Televen will be just fine.

Would somebody bring out the dead horse.

First of all this thread had nothing to do with UK--it was about the Big 10 but since you opened the can of worms the past 20 seasons UK is 10-1 against the MAC. Perhaps your relationship with MAC teams clouded your memory.

I am not at all saying that the Big 10 has a tough OOC schedule. In reality, NO conference does due to the current system we have of deciding a champion. The system itself promotes scheduling weaker teams OOC.

My point was is that the gap in OOC schedules isn't as large as some would like you to believe. I get your point about MAC schools, but A) it wasn't that long ago that the MAC was the premiere non BCS conference and B) the MAC schools will always be on a Big 10 schedule due to the history and proximity with the schools.

Honestly, how big of a difference is there between a Big 10 OOC schedule and a SEC OOC schedule? One game that is against a better opponent, if that? I'd hardly call that head and shoulders better than the other conference.

I don't think you can really look at previous year bowl teams, at best it is a cloudy conclusion. First, everyone and their brother makes it to a bowl game. What can we really say about beating a team that went 6-6 or 7-5 the previous year? Second, the talent at the non-BCS conferences is cyclical. So while a team like Boise St. may have a great year one year, they may fall way off the following year. Finally, most of these games are being played in the first 3 weeks. You simply cannot judge a conference, or a team, based on a single game during the beginning of the season. Does anyone think Tennessee wouldn't have destroyed Cal at the end of the year? Or that VT would have given LSU a better game?

1. Recruit more speed, conference wide.

2. Play road games every year vs another BCS school.

3. Don't stop playing at Thanksgiving and take off 60 days before the Bowl.

4. If possible add N.D.
