Many programs seem to have faced multiple players leaving their teams this season.

At Breathitt it has to deal with politics! People around here cant be happy with someone who isnt winning every year. I understand that but they also need to understand that everynow and then your gonna lose more than you win. It also has to deal with who you know and what your last name is. Thats a shame.

It goes back to my post about kids quitting. We have become a short term society. It is all about me and it is all about right now. No longer do coaches want to build a program and stay there. No longer do kids want to just be on a team and be role players. No longer do parents want to support the coach and school, they just want little Johnny to play all the time.

Parents should expect their children to stick with it once they start. I also agree with politics and coaches trying to please certain people as a contributing factor.

Kids are more spoiled now. It is all about the "me" factor.

I agree but wouldn't have stated it some harshly.

 

Kids have much more choices. And their social time is important to them. And it is available to them because so many have a car or their friends have a car.

 

When the rest of us grew up, you didn't have so many social choices or opportunities to run around. Practicing WAS your social time and opportunity to run.

 

Now they have hundreds of choices. And when the commitment gets in the place of their social time, they choose social time.

I think that many kids leave because they see so much emphasis on the top scorers in the game and they do not understand their role and importance.

 

I think some Coaches forget to tell the players what they bring to a team and they quit in frustration.

 

Quitting is easy, sticking with something and seeing it through takes much more character.

More like the parents expect and tell the kid that they are supposed to be a top scorer. And the kid doesn't buy into what the coach is telling them.

I agree that is a large part of it, but also sharing other stats with the kids like rebounds and steals, talking about good defense, gives the kid something to tell the parent.

 

Or telling a younger kid ( soph ) what you think their future role on the varsity team needs to be and what to work on.

All of thes are very good answers.

What happened to TEAM? Living in a society where parents support their kids quitting or transferring is hurting them in the long run. They will grow up thinking it's ok to quit their job, marriage, etc...I miss the role players who play 100% every night even if they only get a few minutes of playing time and don't score. There is no more passion like that, we only see five kids trying to out shine one another instead of playing together to get a win for their school.

I think that the coaches definitely need to step up and let each kid on the team know just how important they are and that he needs them all to make a winning team. One coach that I can think of but will not mention a name, he thinks he doesn't need the players that quit and he only needs the younger ones. He should have praised more and belittled less.

 

On the other hand, once a kid starts a sport, I think the parent needs to let them know that quitting is not the thing to do, but stick it out and be there for your TEAM!! Because if the coach doesn't care before the kid quits, he sure isn't going to care after the kid leaves, so the parent needs to let that kid know to be there for his TEAM......

I agree that we often raise 'quitters'. But what about the kids who have played for 10 different coaches without quitting but then quit while playing for one certain coach? There truly are bad coaches, more bad ones than good ones in fact. And sometimes there are really terrible coaches. Point being, sometimes it aint the kid at all.

I have known coaches who bring the "role" players into the office after the mid-point of the season and tells them that he would understand if they decided to quit due to the lack of playing time. That he would not be mad at them if they decided that they did not want to commit the time to practicing and not getting the minutes. And others who bring 10 seniors into his office before the season starts and tells them that he will only keep 4-5 of them which basically tells the "role" players from the last few years they are not needed or wanted. I personally do not think that players should quit the team after they commit to it but I also do not believe that a coach should encourage them to quit either.
