Pineville 54 Cumberland 52, 13th All A

Featured Replies

If you've been to Cumberland then you can figure that money for traveling would be an issue for them.

There are no coal companies over in the Benham/Lynch/Cumberland area that could be approached? Seems to me that would be great PR for businesses in an industry that sorely needs it.

Has Pineville whined about it?

They and Cumberland's fans sure have. Cumberland more so, I'll admit.

Work the boosters and hit the pavement.

This isnt college. It's one of the poorest counties in the state, and you are wanting them to hit up the boosters? I would say odds are JD has worked the phones and tried to get teams to play them. His son is a very good player on his team, so I'm sure he wants to get him some exposure. I think Bardstown is spoiling you.

Coal aint what it used to be.

I havent noticed any Pineville whining.

Not really. Well, maybe a little bit. :D I did see much better competition night-in and night-out with the Laurel schools.

The local boys teams aren't going out of their way to schedule 6th and 7th region teams, and play a few too many in-region games against weaker teams for my tastes. But, they aren't painfully weak schedules either.

None of the coal operators in Harlan Co. can afford a couple thousand dollars here and there to sponsor a local team that has a chance to bring some glory to an impoverished area? I'm not buying it.

And honestly, the Laurel schools are in a perfect location to play just about anybody. Not to mention they are huge schools with great facilities and great boosters. Heck, they have their own Christmas tournament.

I know you're trying to be funny, but all you're really doing is making excuses that allow you to keep playing the "no respect" card. Can't have it both ways.

If you have a good team, put it out there and test it. If you're not going to do so, don't whine when your 18-2 team doesn't get a sniff of the statewide rankings.

I never said they werent getting any respect, all Ive really noticed is you bashing them because of their schedule. Lets not forget they are Pineville. Im guessing in the previous 10 years combined they are no where close to winning 50% of their games.

One word: Greed.

Also, like I said, Coal aint what it used to be.

Right, but in school systems the size of Pineville, you can see the good class(es) coming up several years in advance. Plenty of time to line things up so that you can get the most out of them by the time they get ready for varsity.

And I'm not bashing Pineville or Cumberland in particular. My gripe is a general one.

I realize that, but it's not like the industry is going belly-up. Especially when you consider the high cost of oil.

If they're too greedy to donate a few thousand to help the local teams offset costs, that's pretty weak. A nice letter-writing campaign might shame them into a few donations (ones that can be written off on taxes).

I do think teams should challenge themselves a little when they are supposed to be good, but just the for this season and last has Lambdin and Jeffries developed into good players. And during that time Warren has developed some consistency. Up until this very season it was hard to tell how good they would be.

Pineville has had a lot of good middle school teams. You really never know what they are going to end up with. They lucked out in having a bunch of county kids transfer in before their freshman year. :sssh:

Well I guess they are. There are some other factors that would effect a school like Cumberland that might not effect a school like Cawood in what some coal operators might do, but I dont think that is a topic for BGP.

I dont recall Cumberland fans whining about it, as for myself I have said on numerous occasions that their weak schedule has been a detriment to their development and to their ranking in the statewide polls. When you look at the Cal preps rankings Cumberland is ranked 49th in the state and of those 49 teams Cumberland's schedule is ranked the weakest and that is just very unfortunate for these kids. I dont know why their schedule is what it is, I really wanted to see them schedule a couple games in Lexington and play in the 5th/3rd tournament down there also. Having said this however, they may have their work cut out for them, but I do believe their coaches and players will continue to work hard and learn from their mistakes and will still be prepared to make a strong run at the 13th region title. As for this loss to Pineville, it is absolutely not anything to be ashamed of, Pineville is an excellent team. There have been 3 region favorites already knocked out of this tournament (Elliot, Shelby Valley and Cumberland) and I am sure this will be something that will be a motivating factor that will drive these teams for the remainder of this year and into March. Keep your heads up Skins, you are still a great team capable of big things!!
I think Day would obviously have something to say about that best big man in the region comment.

Pineville has 4 very solid players. A big man with touch that stays out of foul trouble in Day, a guard that can get his own shot and create for others in Strange, a very good shooter in Warren, and Mr. Do-Everything in Jeffrey.

Day is a very good player but he is not as talented as Johnson or Brumback from Jackson on the block. I will say if I had to start a team in the 13th my first pick would be Strange from P-ville.
