Function wise, they'll both do the same things.

 

In my opinion, one HUGE advantage that Garmin has over Tom-Tom is the mapping software capabilities. When driving to your final destination, Garmin will say, "Starbucks ahead on right" while Tom-Tom will just say, "Starbucks ahead".

 

On a small, non-busy road, it won't matter if you don't know the final destination is on the right or left. But on a busy road (Hurstbourne in Louisville, Nicholasville Road in Lexington), it is extremely advantageous to know whether your final destination is on the left or right. When I learned about this, I went with Garmin all the way.

 

My TomTom lets you know when you have reached your final destination, it even says that exact wording.

But does it say "on right" or "on left"? I tried out similar models of each and the Tom-Tom would not say the final destination was on the right or left. It would tell me if the upcoming turn was left or right, but it would not say "Approaching Starbucks, on right". It would only say "Approaching Starbucks".

 

One of the more useful features of a personal navigation device is the ability to tell you if your destination is on the right or left hand side of the street. This may seem like a small thing, but imagine you are routing to a destination on a major street, like El Camino Real in San Jose. This road is 8 lanes wide in some places, and many of the addresses are part of large shopping complexes that don’t have the addresses clearly marked on the street. It is very useful to know if your destination is going to be on the right or left hand side of the street. Both the Garmin and Magellan (and, by the way, Alpine and even Horizon) have this feature, but the TomTom GO 910 does not. In fact, not a single GPS that uses Tele Atlas mapping data offers this important feature.

 

We're not sure if it's the Tele Atlas mapping software itself, or if the GPS manufacturers are leaving off the attributes for which side of the street or road the final destination is on. This information is available to the GPS manufacturers, albeit for a fee -- maybe some manufacturers are not willing to pay the additional cost. This is a significant feature to be missing from the TomTom GO 910.

We love our Garmin and it really talks to you abut your directions and will tell you to turn around or turn right or left and if your final destination is right or left and it counts you down to feet very helpful.

My TomTom tells me whether to turn left or right. To quote it...

 

"Turn right and you have reached your destination."

I bought a Garmin, opened it up in my car, and used it on the way home. Very easy to use. The Garmin also gives you voice by voice instructions. Very easy to use user interface as well.
