Jim Schue
For as long as I can recall, Tuesday has been the day for new releases of music, movies and video games. My first experience of New Release Tuesday was riding up to Florence from Warsaw with my uncle way back when I was eight so he could pick up a copy of Supertramp's outstanding album "Breakfast In America." He was staying with my parents at the time and knew I was a big music junkie, so he would indulge me by letting me have at his record collection and by taking me with him to the record stores when he went to pick up new stuff. So, if you want someone to blame for how I am about music, my uncle is a good place to start. Anyway, I thought it would be cool to have a running thread where folks can list their recent music, movie and game pick-ups and make suggestions, etc. So, have at it! Jim Schue
Today's pick-ups were long-awaited releases from two of my favorite bands: "Hernando" by North Mississippi All-Stars "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" by Drive-By Truckers

HOMELESS CAMEL
I don't ever buy anything cause I have no money. BUT I would be happy to list what comes out on DVD and CD today. Gameplan Starring the Rock, didn't see that one in theatres. Saw 4 Reservation Road starring Jennifer Connelly and Jaoquin Phoenix and Blonde Ambition starring Jessica Simpson. I list that movie because it was so bad, they could only release it direct to DVD. The only cd that comes out today with a name that I somewhat recognize is the band Whigs. They have a cd that comes out today called Mission Control.

HOMELESS CAMEL
I hope you recognize it because you're a fan of the great Afghan Whigs. Not sure who this name-stealing upstart is, though. Yep, when I did a search on Amazon for Whigs, Afghan Whigs came up, I know them for sure. As for this band Whigs, they are from Athens, GA: In the summer of 2005 the band recorded their first album, Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip, in an empty fraternity house. They used equipment purchased on eBay and resold after recording was finished to help offset the cost of production. Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip was released independently in 2005. In July 2006, The Whigs signed with Dave Matthews' record label ATO Records, and Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip was rereleased on September 19, 2006. Before signing with Matthew's label, Rolling Stone called the band "perhaps the best unsigned band in America." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Whigs As for a sample of their music:
Jim Schue
Both of today's purchases are VERY good. With the Truckers, it just feels a lot deeper than the last album. "Lisa's Birthday" is especially good. With the NoMiss AS, it's a grittier, gutsier album than the last, with less hip-hop influence and more of that dirty Delta blues. HOMELESS CAMEL
Dusting off this thread before it vanished to page 2. shamrock fan
The last thing I picked up first day was a book called World War Z by Max Brooks. I pre-ordered Mothership on iTunes for one of my kids. We also had to pre-order Guitar Hero III for Wii. I guess I will buy the next season of Law and Order Criminal Intent if/when it ever gets released. I've gotten old and boring...

Unfortunately, I have not seen them live, so I can't give a full assessment. I can assure you that the studio version is better than that.
