The Perfect Football Defense

Whatever defenses Chuck Smith ran at Boyle County. :D

I am a big believr in the multiple 50. It is really a 3-4 when run correctly. You need versitile up-men on the ends of the line of scrimmage. Those guys are key, along with a good nose and a good Mike. It is versitile enough that, with proper personnel and coaching, you can match up against the run and shoot one week and the triple option the next. I love it!

I've seen several teams run the Multiple 50, and to me it looks a lot like the 3-5-3. Depending on what the offence gives you, you can have a defensive formation of 3-4, 4-4, or 5-3. Looks like a good defense.

My high school coach, Bill Tom Ross, wrote a book on the Multiple 3-5-3. It is a very versatile defense, that is adaptable to what kind of offense you are facing. The Multiple 50 defense reminds me of this 3-5-3.

Whatever Defense that the coach determines is the best one to run for his talent vs. his opponet. .(and preferrably holds them scoreless).......:D

"If we score, we may win, If they NEVER score, we will never lose..........DEFENSE WINS Championships!!".........Larry Heck ( Former Raceland Football Coach - 70's).

I love that quote, I have heard several times. Has to be one of his best.

So you think that their Defensive coaching staff never once worried about match ups? I can't imagine, their best player never even covered people, he was the blitzer. I am sure that they, just like all defensive staffs, spent many hours looking at film to make sure they could run their scheme. It's not like they are that good that they can just line up and call a play and watch it work

Thier Defensive scheme is not that good, In fact there is probably only 2 or three teams in the state that could run it, and be successful. There scheme is a good example of Jimmy's and Joes, not X's and O's.

They have good talent but they are not world beaters. If they lined up and played a read, 4 man front they would be destroyed. They are not that big on the defensive line and to sit and try to man up would be insane! It is their scheme that permits them to be a good defensive team. It allows them to match up with most offensive sets. Their secondary was good/average high school athletes. They were not better jimmy's or joe's. They were well coached in a scheme that allows them to be successful. I am not saying that it is the best D, but for that team it is a great scheme.

We will just have to agree to disagree, I have played against, coached against and watched catholic for a long time, they have a ton of speed and they have far from average players. Until last year I had seen them give up some huge numbers on defense Franklin County I know has had almost 600 yds of offense on them more than once. With their talent that is not a good scheme. They are very talented as talented as any team 5a and below in the state.

I agree, Franklin played them as tough or tougher last year as anyone in the state. Them running the Franklin(Tony) system to perfection. I enjoyed going to those games to see all the points and plays. I would not say that Catholic was that much more athletic then the Flyers. I think you may be selling your team short. FC could match up with most teams in the state last couple of years. They are a great team and probably should have beat LC in playoffs last year but didn't. good luck in the future, maybe they will play again and we can both enjoy another great game.

He had quite a few............ask cvillecat about "You gotta Love em'"...."you Love em' don't you cville" That story is a classic, one of cvilles (and Heck's) best.

Boyle has ran a 4-4 for years now. Its actually incredibly versatile because they can give 3-4, 3-5, 4-3, 4-5 looks out of it. It depends on how the offense lines up. Those defenses were excellent during the championship runs.
