January 7, 200818 yr Author http://blogs.honoluluadvertiser.com/warriorbeat.php Posted on: January 7, 2008 at 6:02:22 am Hawaii time >>>>>[five hours behind Eastern] Jones says he accepted SMU offer Saying he is looking forward to the "next challenge," June Jones today accepted an offer to become SMU's head football coach. Jones said it was an opportunity he could not refuse. "I'll always love Hawai‘i," Jones said. "Hawai‘i will always be a part of me. But it's time to move on." Jones said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of e-mails and calls from UH supporters the past few days. He saie he broke down and cried at least six times. He said he turned off his cell phone last night at his Dallas hotel, and prayed for a decision. "I woke up with such a peace," he said, realizing he would accept the SMU job. Jones said he is leaving behind a talented football team that should be competitive next season. Jones will receive a five-year contract worth $2 million annually. At least three of his assistants will join him at SMU — Greg McMackin, Dan Morrison and Wes Suan. He has offered positions to all of his assistants at UH. Jones returns to Hawai‘i tomorrow to fill out scholarship papers for the gray shirts who will join the Warriors for the 2008 spring semester. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3184911 June Jones was introduced at a news conference Monday as the new head coach at SMU. Earlier, Jones' agent, Leigh Steinberg, confirmed that Jones had agreed to a 5-year deal worth about $2 million per year. On Sunday, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad that SMU was close to finalizing the details of a contract for Jones. The source said the deal is expected to be booster-funded. SMU athletic director Steve Orsini reportedly has sold as many as 20 boosters on the concept of donating as much as $100,000 per year for five years. Jones was moved by Hawaii fans, including Gov. Linda Lingle, who pushed for him to stay. But, ultimately, facilities and a bigger budget won out. Jones called Hawaii officials Monday morning to tell them of his decision.
