December 19, 200718 yr I have not yet formed an opinion on him as a coach or recruiter, I do believe he is a first class jerk. We recently took a group of students on a tour of Rupp and all the tour staff could talk about was what a jerk BCG was to them. These were retired gentlemen who are avid UK fans. The say he goes out of his way to be a jerk! He may end up being successful at Uk, and I hope he does, I also hope he is humbled somewhere along the way.
December 19, 200718 yr Does anyone else feel like a resident of Hickory, Indiana trying to figure what the coach is up to?
December 19, 200718 yr Does anyone else feel like a resident of Hickory, Indiana trying to figure what the coach is up to? I keep holding on to that sentiment, and praying that it's true.

Just give the guy some time let him get used to the fans and the expectation of the fans... Pitino was an arrogant jerk also but everyone treated him like a god... you know why? He won ballgames.
December 19, 200718 yr You know what's funny about this thread? It's that if Reed's "axe" was with UofL as opposed to UK, you and most of the rest of the folks in this thread would think he was doing Pulitzer Prize material. I also read the companion articles where Reed attacks Bobby Petrino and Derrick Caracter (although he spent most of it attacking Bradley and Crawford). Since all were opinion pieces and not news, I give him some leeway. However, the allegations against Gillispie are serious enough to demand some sort of proof other than "I heard the rumors from sources I trust". Now, having said that, I personally am beginning to believe that there is entirely too much smoke for at least some fire to not exist. If the rumors are true, it should not be difficult to prove at least some via cell phone photos or eyewitness accounts. Despite what some of our win at all cost fan base believes, the UK program should not have to accept this type of behavior from it's head coach. There are other classier fish in the sea.

One would think that some pictures would have surfaced if these rumors are indeed true. Just take a look at the UL-Vegas situation, those pictures surfaced pretty quickly. Yet Gillispie parties all night every night this summer with 18 yr. old girls and none on them snap a picture with him or of him leads me to believe there is a lot more smoke than fire when it comes to these rumors.
December 19, 200718 yr I keep holding on to that sentiment, and praying that it's true. I'm ready to run the picket fence, that's for sure!
December 19, 200718 yr I'm ready to run the picket fence, that's for sure! Just don't get caught watchin' the paint dry. ...an' then those guys in the white coats came for me and I didn't even care. I'm sure one of the above Shooter quotes will apply to UK fans this season. I'm just not sure which one yet.
December 19, 200718 yr Very good points by Mr. Reed. Some things are tradition and a part of the UK program, like Van Florence. Being rude and arrogant really makes no sense to me by this staff, what do they have to be arrogant about? In the end, BCG may win a lot games at UK, but along the way he is going to rub MANY people the wrong way! Then we will be able to see if winning trumps all, won't we? It does. Most people already know that. If Gillispie wins big, all this other stuff will be a distant memory....if even that.
December 19, 200718 yr What if he really is a disaster? How long would he be given...and what is the criteria that would dictate his career? What say you...how long? I mean, it's not like he inherited a team with national title aspirations and finished .500. Hypothetically, suppose Coach A (or Coack K, if you wish) did inherit a team that was looking at a potential national title and finished .500. How long should he get? Conversely, one who inherits a depleted roster, then suffers injuries to two of his best players and struggles as a result...shouldn't he get longer?
December 19, 200718 yr Rumors and off court issues aside, I have trouble believing Billie Clyde knows how to coach. If these first 9 games are any indication, I'm really worried. Basically, what's hapened at UK is we've traded a guy that was weak with recruiting (but sure could coach) to a guy that can recruit (but, well, isn't looking real sensible). What will we get from that? The same results, as in a sweet 16 exit? Thereby, could we say it's a wash? Actually, instead of our coach's recruiting efforts being the spotlight of the program, now our coach's personal life is the spotlight. Not a good trade. Actually, if that's indeed what you got, you'll probably suffer a little more in the short term, but you'll be far better off in the long...so, would you trade possible stacked rosters and title contenders in a few years, for another 20-10 season now...and the next season...and the next season...and the next...ahh, you get it?
December 19, 200718 yr Just give the guy some time let him get used to the fans and the expectation of the fans... Pitino was an arrogant jerk also but everyone treated him like a god... you know why? He won ballgames. :thumb: I'd rather have a jerk winning games, than a nice guy who doesn't. I think Steve Spurrier said it best..."If everybody likes you, then they're probably beating you." It doesn't matter one iota to me whether UK's coach is a nice guy or a jerk...I've never met a UK coach in my life and probably never will. They're hired as a basketball coach, not PR man.
December 19, 200718 yr What if he really is a disaster? How long would he be given...and what is the criteria that would dictate his career? If he really is...............then I would guess 2-3 years max before he would be asked to move on. I really don't think that winning big would get him a reprieve, just a little more time.
December 19, 200718 yr And, one final point...about what Bobby Knight said. What is significant about that? It's a question everyone who comes to coach at UK (or any other major school of that caliber) must answer. Can they handle the pressures of coaching at UK? Period. Gillispie isn't the first guy that has had that question asked about him and he won't be the last.
