December 13, 200718 yr Waterboarding: It's a Good Thing by Greg Gutfeld http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,316546,00.html We've heard a lot about waterboarding lately — but only from people who never have anything nice to say about our country anyway. In a sense they're using waterboarding to torture us — as a constant reminder that Americans are no better than our adversaries. We don't' fly planes into buildings or don't behead gays, but a little simulated drowning, that's unforgivable. Now, waterboarding might be torture, but as long as people I hate also hate waterboarding, then I love it more than life itself. That's my recipe for life. If The New York Times, NPR, Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Hugo Chavez hate something, then it must be awesome. So I cherish waterboarding. I want to make it our national sport, our national bird. I want to make the waterboard the state flower of Vermont, instead of the Birkenstock. As you know, a top Bin Laden lieutenant gave his cohorts up after a half-minute of the stuff. This new info prevented dozens of attacks. But if we had listened to the Streisands and Afflecks of the world and banned waterboarding, then how many lives might have been lost? Who knows. It's hard to prove a negative. It's also hard to find a Christmas sweater that doesn't make me look fat, but it doesn't stop me from trying. And that's my gut feeling! December 13, 200718 yr Since waterboarding is so great should our enemies use it on our POW's or prisoners in other countries? If its okay for us to do, is it also alright for others???
December 13, 200718 yr Since waterboarding is so great should our enemies use it on our POW's or prisoners in other countries? If its okay for us to do, is it also alright for others??? Do you think they WON"T torture if we stop? This is a difficult conversation as we do hold ourselves out to be better than our enemies. I struggle with the fact that it doesn't matter what we do, they will not change how our people are treated. So if we gain nothing if we stop, and we can gain very valuable information that can save lives, perhaps very many lives, if we continue; what do we do?
December 13, 200718 yr If you want to torture someone, I would only condone the use of making them marry Hillary Clinton or Rosie O'donnell. Although both may be violations of the Geneva convention.

Much of this has an "Ann Coulterish" sarcastic overtone to it which gives it that extra special touch.:thumb:
December 13, 200718 yr if your parents smoke, drink, use drugs, etc. you are more likely to abuse as well. If we hold ourselves to a higher standard, then others may see us as an example. If we do it & allow waterboarding which is torture then other countries will torture however they see if. If the US uses torture then torture must be alright. We are not a monarchy, dictatorship, totalitarian, 3rd world country, etc.
December 13, 200718 yr Since waterboarding is so great should our enemies use it on our POW's or prisoners in other countries? If its okay for us to do, is it also alright for others??? They probably already do this and even worse to our POW's. We are probably the only nation that upholds the Geneva Convention.
December 13, 200718 yr They probably already do this and even worse to our POW's. We are probably the only nation that upholds the Geneva Convention. Other countries also throw political rivals in jail, kill opponents, militants run the gov't, elections are fixed, etc. So, do we need to do them as well?? We are the United States of America & we should hold ourselves to a higher standard!! don't we tell our children, "if your friend jumps off a bridge, would you?" or "I don't care what Billy's parents let him do, you aren't." Just because others do it, doesn't make it right!!
December 13, 200718 yr When you're talking about actions that may save many (thousands?) of lives, it puts a whole new parameter into the equation. That's where I struggle with it.

So if we gain nothing if we stop, and we can gain very valuable information that can save lives, perhaps very many lives, if we continue; what do we do? We shouldn't base our non use of torture on what others are doing. We've lost the war then without having been in a battle. It's ironic to me that the one candidate who KNOWS exactly what torture is about and to what ends says NO to waterboarding. That's McCain. As to what we gain if we stop: We gain the Moral Compass of the situation. For me and my faith, that is more than enough. It's interesting that this nation could have tortured numerous German and Japanese officials to get information that would have saved thousands of lives (troop movements, U-Boat designs and tactics, etc) but we chose not to against an even more threatening enemy. My question is why do we think it's okay in this fight but we chose not to in the greatest one?

My question is why do we think it's okay in this fight but we chose not to in the greatest one? I don't really see where "moral compass" comes in to play when you are dealing with terrorists. We were attacked in NYC. Not a US territory thousands of miles from the mainland. But attacked in the center of our greatest city. Therefore I feel this our greatest fight and will be for years to come. I would do much worse than waterboarding if I felt I could gain information to save mine or my families life. Just my opinion.

December 13, 200718 yr We also put Japanese Americans (US citizens) in camps after WWII. Do you also agree with this?? Do whatever to survive? So, we should just nuke the rest of the world so we dont worry. that would be logical!!
December 13, 200718 yr I believe Bill Orielly once told McCain that Torture was a good thing and he (McCain) didn't know what he was talking about. On the daily show, John Stewart responded by saying: "And next O'Reilly will school Stephen Hawking in a debate on quantum physics and wheelchair ramps.
