How do they justify ranking Boone so far ahead of Owensboro. Boone was 10-4 to Owensboro's 12-2, both made the state semi's, and Owensboro beat Boone at their place. What is it about Boone that I am missing?

I don't mean this to be a slam on Trinity, obviously they are a great team, but I have a hard time believing that only one team in the state of Florida is better than they are. Considering all of the talent from Florida playing at the high D1 level, I would think that there has to be multiple teams in Florida that would have no trouble in KY 6A.

 

I'm curious as to how they base these rankings, obviously nobody is able to really watch all the teams in the country.

The problem with your argument is football is a "TEAM" sport. Look at Trotwood Madison that Highlands played in the Herbie. They had 6 or 7 D1 kids on their team and got beat by the Birds. A bunch of individuals aren't worth a hill of beans unless they play as a "TEAM"...:ylsuper:

wow, this poll is hysterical. no way on God's green earth is Highlands the #18 in the country. I would have to strongly disagree with Trinity being ranked so high as well. These two teams would not have matched up well with weaker GCL south teams like Elder and Moeller. Not trying to take anything away from these two teams, but come on now.

 

Red7, I love the GCL teams and agree that there is no way that Highlands is the 18th best team in the country, but you'd be surprised how well Highlands would have matched up with Elder and Moeller. As pointed out by another poster, Elder was fortunate to beat Highlands last year. Ask any reasonable Elder fan at that game ( I sat with one) and they'll tell you the same. But for unforced fumbles by Highlands and a stupid delay of game call, and Highlands wins by 7-10 points. While I'm not one of the Highlands folks that believes this year's team was that much better than last year's Highlands team, they certainly were as good as last year's team. This year's team no doubt benefitted record wise from not having to play Elder, Louis. St X (back to back I might add) and Cols DeSales, plus the CovCath team this year shadowed in comparison to last year's CovCath team (sorry CovCath fans, but you have to admit that's true), but this year's Highlands team was still a very good team and could have certainly matched up well with Elder, Moeller and LaSalle. Would they have beaten Cinti X? Nope, then again no team in Ohio beat them nor did some powerhouse national teams either.

 

But again, I don't disagree with you that Highlands is not the 18th best team in the country. But the ratings folks do and for the Highlands players on this year's team, it is pretty cool.

The team is currently 14-0 and will play Orlando Boone this Saturday for the Florida 6A (largest class) state championship. They have defeated their opponets this season by an average score of 42-10. This includes a win against Southlake Carroll, which has won 4 of the last 5 Texas 5A (largest class) state championships. That game took place on a "neutral" field on the campus of SMU. That game also snapped a 49 game win streak by Carroll.

 

Yet MaxPreps feels that Northwestern is only the 47th best team in the country. Perhaps they will lose Saturday, however, if you win the state championship in the largest class in Florida, I have got to believe that there are not 46 teams that are better in the country.

One other thought regarding the MaxPreps ratings. These are computer rankings. As far as he computer is concerned, it doesn't care how many D1 players you have on your roster. In essence, it's just a mathematical formula. The objective of the ranking is to level the playing field for judging all high school teams. In theory, by the end of any season the ability of the computer to predict who's best is quite accurate. (In essence, it's a high school version of the Sagarin ratings for College and Pro sports.) While you may not agree with the results, I'd argue that it's by far the best way to make an educated judgement of who's the best in the country. And, for my money, it's far better than USA Today poll.

 

(And, by the way, don't be surprised if Northwestern wins the Florida championship that they jump in the Max Preps rating...because the the strength of schedule generally improves by playing a top-notch opponent in this type of game.)

Nah, it really was a reasonable Elder fan I promise. I don't know if there are two of them, but there is one for sure. I'm sure I wasn't hallucinating. He's one of my law partners. He walked out saying Elder did not deserve to win that game and still says so.

Maxpreps is garbage. As is any poll that doesn't use some sort of human input into their rankings. If you look at the Ohio rankings, they have Marion Local (Div. 5) ranked ahead of Colerain....yeah, right. :lol:

• Highlands beats every GCL team, sans St. Xavier. LaSalle was below average (which is amazing given their talent) and only won 1 game against Division 1 opponents. Elder was bad...very bad. Moeller could do some good things offensively, but they couldn't stop the run. Something tells me Highlands might have had a field day with Moeller's defense.
  
• Northwestern is NOT the #1 team in the country. No way. They were losing the entire game last week until the last minute when they came back to beat a 2-loss team by 2 points.
  
• Their win over SLC lost luster as the season wore on and finally hit bottom when SLC was bounced from the playoffs 2 weeks.
  
• If they win Saturday, which you would think the #1 team in the nation should do...handily, it doesn't mean that there aren't 46 teams in the nation that are better. Maybe Flordia 6A is down this year? In fact, when was the last time Florida 6A was even the strongest division in Florida?
  

If you want a good poll, you need to go to PrepNation. Jamie DeMoney does a good job and has a network all over the country. He also reviews thousands of tapes a year of teams and has a much better idea than some algorithim who is better than who.

You'll notice I never claimed they were the #1 team in the nation. But I also do not think that Kentucky has 3 teams that are better than they are. And your Jamie Demoney ranks them #3 in the nation so apparantly he agrees with me.

That could have been one of the worse games I've ever seen. My goodness, was Boone really the best 6A had to offer other than Northwestern?? :creepy:

 

After seeing MNW again, in their final game, they are a top 5 team in the country. Too much talent not to be. But they are probably #5 in my list.

Maybe not, MNW obviously had a much tougher game in the state semi's but as we all should know, sometimes the two best teams aren't always on opposite sides of the bracket.
