December 3, 200718 yr mutual funds OK. As I drive and scan the radio , it seems like I'm often hearing folks calling in who have paid off the mortgage early and I didn't know if that was on DR's advice or their own. I would assume DR would suggest the equity market and take advantage of the interest deduction and low rate combination instead of using extra cash to pay off the mortgage early.
December 3, 200718 yr I think the DR folks are tired of being needlessly ridiculed by those that feel they already have all the knowledge in the world, so DR couldn't possibly have any good ideas. I think DR offers a great, Christian-based way to help motivate those that cannot motivate themselves. Many people are so deep in debt and financial problems that they feel hopeless and give up. DR offers some hope and if that saves one family from financial ruin or allows one child to have a decent Christmas, than I say DR's book is a good thing. If that's the case, I'd advise thicker skin. I didn't sense ridicule as much as differing opinions on the best use of money. A serious question: what role in your decision to follow him does the Christian-based aspect play?

After reading the book, his writing skill and factual presentation are my reasoning for trying his plan out.

By ridicule, I meant you seemed to work overtime to come up with hypothetical situations and extreme circumstances to attempt to prove that everything he says is wrong. If that's not the case, I apologize.

December 4, 200718 yr Where did you mention real-world situations at? Did you miss the part about the college kid/ recent grad needing a good car for his potentially high-paying sales position?

December 4, 200718 yr Thank you. Nice niche for DR.Why all the hate for Dave Ramsey? Is it because he is making money for giving his advise? Like a broker, financial advisor, or a 401k provider?
December 4, 200718 yr Author Why all the hate for Dave Ramsey? Is it because he is making money for giving his advise? Like a broker, financial advisor, or a 401k provider? That's what I've been trying to determine. Try to help people out and you'll get dragged under the bus.

That's what I've been trying to determine. Try to help people out and you'll get dragged under the bus. So because I disagree with the philosphy of no car payment, I'm a "hater?" Interesting. I asked the question to Wireman to see if the Christian aspect was a primary benefit or an added benefit. He seems to indicate that its a primary, thus, I comment that DR has found a nice niche. Where's the hate in that? Maybe DR can have a "toughen your backside" chapter added to his book.
December 4, 200718 yr Did you miss the part about the college kid that is 25 years old buying his/her own car? So that I don't put words in your mouth, are you saying that a 25 year old should NEVER have a car loan? Even if having a good car (not a $1,000 beater ) is a necessary investment in order to obtain a job that will pay him substantially more (say $50k to $100k per year) than he's making now? Am I clear on your sentiments? If I am, what is the financial basis?

Not to put words in DR's mouth, but I think he would be okay with the loan but with the idea that that loan is going to be paid off in 12 months and not 35 to 60 months. Make the loan and it is something you will look to pay off VERY QUICKLY.

Am I clear on your sentiments? If I am, what is the financial basis? I'm saying that I just put the kid through college, so he/she should be in a financial position to take care of his/her own car. My kid at that point is very lucky to have financial support between the ages of 18-22 (something I did NOT have). What I'm basically saying is that I did my part and my kids will have to fend for themselves once they get out of college.
