Belfry 42 Magoffin County 14 (3A)

Featured Replies

Final

Not much to discuss.. Pirates led 42-0 at the half, starter's never saw the field on either side of the ball after Intermission.

Ivan Lee had 130+ yards on 2 carries, and 2 TD's.

Thomas Varney had 2 carries for right around 100 yards and 2 TD's.

May probably packed the ball 3 or 4 times for 65-80 yards and a couple scores.I believe

Belfry ran a grand total of like 10-12 plays in the first half and amssed well over 300 yards rushing and scored 6 TD's.

Next week could be tricky against a SC team that could cause fits if the Pirates overlook them.

For the record: Lowest home attendance BY FAR this season. Blowout game. This should never have been a game that was played, LOSE/LOSE for both teams involved.

I would like to give some huge applause for the Magoffin County punter.

Late in the first half the Hornets were set to punt at about their own 30 yard line, the snap was bad and rolled between the punter's legs to about the 2 yard line. The punter scooped up the ball to see about 5 Pirates coming at him, he broke two tackles, reversed field, and right as the Pirates had him seemed in on the sideline he got a quick kick off that was downed at the 35 yard line.I have seen punters scramble when a block was coming or on a bad snap and get a punt off, but this kid literally ran around and broke tackles for a good 10 seconds before having the brains to still get the kick away.

Sadly, after such a great effort, the Pirates quickly scored on the very next play. HAHA

Belfry moves on to play Sheldon Clark, who they beat 34-7 in regular season play.

Really reaching for a compliment there, huh?

Magoffin will get better, but it will take time.

Magoffin is physical and they do a lot of the little things right. Coach McCoy will build them into a better program if given the time and support.

Magoffin took the opening kick and drove down the field on Belfry. They actually scored on that drive but it was called back on a holding call. Belfry got hit with a makeup pass interference on the next play and it looked like the Hornets would score first. But a time out gave Belfry's coaches the chance to, um, give the defense some strong verbal motivation ;), and they held them out of the end zone.

Does anyone realize that if Magoffin's TD had stood, that would have been the first time this Pirate team had trailed in a game all year?

I wonder what kind of chin straps they use at Magoffin? I remember 3 helmets popping off their kids during the 1st half.

One more thing.

I have to say something about Ryan Preston.

Ryan plays solid football where ever he is asked to play. Week in and week out, he is there when he is needed and last night was no exception. He played QB for the injured Elkins and was flawless.

But that is not what I wanted to call attention to.

He has to be one of the best high school holders I have ever seen. Week after week he makes it look easy and takes the snaps on XP or FG attempts and no matter where the ball is, he snags it and gets it down for the kick. Bad snaps are going to happen in high school ball. I have seen him take some snaps that I don't think anyone else could have gotten down on the block and he did it with ease. That is such an important job and nobody does as well as Ryan. Good job Mr Preston, it is a joy to watch.

Red Army keep rolling .... Looking forward to another matchup for a state title this year ...

Considering how quite the stadium was at the time, I think the coaches was able to give everyone in attendance that strong verbal motivation HAHA.

I noticed the ammount of helmets coming off too. The oddest occurance was whena Magoffin player made a solid open field tackle (I believe on Lovern) and you see a helmet rolling on the ground. Considering the severity of the hit, I thought it was the Belfry back's helmet, but it was actually the defender.

And I agree about Preston... if one was to watch solely Belfry's snaps on PAT's and XP's... I'd be willing to bet at least half are what would be considered "bad" (either high or to the side). It really is a non-glory position, bu Preston has to be sued to that. His two positions (SE/CB) are both non-glory positions in Belfry's scheme. I'd also add on to what you say about him by commedning the way he blocks when he plays SE. He is one of the better blocking receivers I have seen at Belfry.

Article on the game from the News-Express.

Belfry's first half offense, 10 plays, 6 TD's.

Stat of the game: May, Lee, and Varney's combined rushing numbers:

8 carries, 275 yards, 6 TD's.

That's 34.4 yards per carry, and a touchdown every 1.3 carries (Daggone May ruining the average withhis 4 carries!)
