We have debated and debated this too death, so here it is, a poll for all to vote.

If you hit other explain why and give dates.

If heat is really the problem(I believe it is) then Aug. 1st is the obvious answer.

since the districts are smaller now (4-5 teams) I wouldn't be opposed to eliminating the open date AND knocking down the reg. season to 9 games. That way the Aug. 1st start date (which I also agree with) can be instituted without extending the season further.

Also if the KHSAA's mission is to include as many teams as possible to the playoffs (like basketball and baseball/softball) why not just include them all. Make a bye week after the last week of the reg. season and use that week for the districts that have 5 -6 teams to play a "play in" game.

using 2008 dates on the calendar:

Fri. Aug. 1 - 1st day of practice

Fri./Sat. Aug. 22-23 - 1st week scrimmage

Fri./Sat. Aug. 29-30 - 2nd week scrimmage

Fri./Sat. Sept. 5-6 - 1st week reg. season

Fri./Sat. Oct. 31st-Nov. 1st - 9th (last) week reg. season

Fri./Sat. Nov. 7th/8th - "play-in" round for 5-6 team districts

Fri./Sat. Nov. 14th/15th - 1st round playoffs

Fri./Sat. Dec. 12-13 - State Championships

Just one man's thoughts.

I am against shortening the season, but doing away with the buy week is fine with me, and if we have to have a buy week, then I wish we could have it between the last regular season game and the first playoff game, like it used to be. I think a 10 game season with the top two seeds making the playoffs would be the best scenario. If that does not happen then I would prefer that all teams make the playoff. Right now, 95% of the teams are making the playoffs, if they are not going to go to a top two team format, then let everyone in and call it what it is - a single elimination tournament. There is just something wrong with only one 2A team not making the playoffs.

I prefer, 10 game regular season, with 2 scrimmages, the top 2 teams making the playoffs from each district, those 2 teams playing another district in the first round, and eliminate the buy week.

I'd say something like West virgia's system, let strength of schedule and record determine who deserves to play in the postseason.I know 1 bad game can hurt in this system, but that's competitive football.

As for season length,I enjoyed the days when a team could schedule an extra game, but the heat should not be as big of a factor as everyone claims.I'm not sure how it is now,but when I was in school,we worked longer and as hard in practice as on game night, wich was at night unlike practice, which was mornings and evenings.

I like the current format that is in place, the only change that I would make would be to just allow the Top 2 teams from each district in the playoffs. Some of the current districts only have 4 teams which means they have to do nothing to get into the playoffs, which in my mind tarnishes the accomplishment of making the playoffs. JMO.

I think we should keep the current dates with only the top two from each district moving on and here is the change:

Eliminate the bye week BUT have teams play 11 regular season games that way those that normally would have had a playoff berth at the #3 and #4 seeds would still get an extra game.

OR you could do how they do in New Jersey, those teams that don't make the playoffs will be assigned a team to play against that also didn't make the playoffs once the regular season is over. If you did this, I would say have the 11th week a bye week for those that do make the playoffs and have the non-playoff teams play that week.

Just another thought.

I would like to see it changed back to playing teams from another distict in the 1st round, it just seems more like the playoffs when you get to play some new teams the first couple of rounds. It is interesting to see how the districts match up with one another as well.

Good responses but lets get more

Let's have a nine week season, create an all-star team from each district, have one playoff like basketball and play St. X and Trinity heads up. The nine week season will allow for 2 bye weeks so the all-star teams can prep for the match up with the Louisville bunch. Of course Highlands can opt out and keep their team intact. I think this is the equalizer everyone has been looking for. The players and coaches pick the guys they want to play and coach with and then there is only 1 STATE Champion.

Any questions?:jump:

Actually I like the way it is now except for the four teams making the playoffs. Keep it at the top 2 and let them square off at district end and this would eliminate one week of playoffs keeping the games to 14 games for state.:ylsuper:

I think the districts need to be bigger, 6 or 7 teams, with the top four advancing to the playoffs. A six team district still leaves five games for non-district games and with only four advancing to the playoffs it eliminates 0-10 or 1-9 teams from advancing.

My recommendations:

1. August 1 starting date ...

2. Four or five classes, not six ...

3. Keep the 11-week schedule with a bye ...

4. The playoff system that existed before 2006 ...
