Another tidbit that came out of the dinner party:

Go to Genesis 4.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=1&chapter=4&version=31&context=chapter

Now, Adam and Eve weres supposed to have been the first humans. In this chapter, she gives birth to Cain and then gives birth to Abel. Cain kills Abel, earns the ubiquitous Mark of Cain, and gets tossed out into the wilderness.

His response forms the topic of dicussion, where he says in 4:14 that "whoever finds me will kill me."

Who is he talking about? If Adam and Eve were the first people and Cain and Abel are the children, what other people are out there to kill Cain? Where did they come from?

Also, later in 4:17 it says that Cain lay with his wife and produced Enoch. Who was his wife? Where did she come from? Was she his sister? Where did all these people come from if humanity flowed from Adam and Eve?

Discuss amongst yourselves. No wine.

My old youth bible with the explinations gave two theories- that God decided to create more humans in other places-more likely; or that Adam and Eve had more children to populate the earth.

I had always understood that the others (not Lost others) were from other children that Adam and Eve had had.

I guess he feared the others getting vengenance for him killing Able.

You win the award for the day. The Bible does not purport to be, nor is it, a complete detailed history of all that occurred or might have occurred.

Possible, but then 4:17 is incestuous, is it not?

The ark one was fun to read, but I have trouble playing along with this one, because it strikes to the very heart of why it's unrewarding (to me) to read the bible as a literal, infallible text.

For the record, I'm a lector in my parish, and my readings are all OT. We Episcopalians just have a different view on meaning and purpose of the OT.

Also for the record, the only meaning that fits both logic and a literal meaning is that NOT all humanity is derived from Adam and Eve. Which brings up a whole host of other concerns (like an original sin debate, the nature of our relationship with God, etc.)

That has always been my belief also, that God created more people, but Adam and Eve, as the first, were the ones whose creation is documented in Genesis.

^ But then 02Ram brings up an excellent point, if Adam and Eve were not the only original humans, what about the Doctrine of the Fall and original sin?

Also, my consistant default response to questions on the whereabouts of family and friends is "Am I my (brother/father/roommate/etc)'s keeper?"

Just to make this even more fun:sssh:

Who were the "others", and where did they live.

OR

Did God not create them?

Did they....evolve from Apes:eek:

I think they were scabs.

What is the Episcopal view?

Is it logical for someone to send their only son as a sacrifice for others that will reject and not care about Him? Not everything in the Bible or about God is humanly logical.

He was trying the escape the vengeance of the evil Lord Xenu. DUH! :D

I think they were scabs.
