The rematch between Newport and NCC was last night. Newport won 13-12. Reality check for NCC. So much for the lack of competition NCC has this year!

Just wait till tonight...

The hoopla was about how great NCC's freshman are and how dumb the A-AA scheduling is. The varsity squads are not the question here! I guess NCC freshamn are human after-all!

Big win for the Freshmen Cats!!! Congratulations to the team, Coach Picirillo, and his staff! Newport has a lot to look forward to in the next couple of years!!! Keep up the good work boys!!!!

Wow!! What a great win for the CATS!! Hopefully, this will provide a little momentum for the varsity as they prepare for tonight's game. By the way, I hear this year's eighth grade team shows great promise for future success as well. I can't wait to seem them make the transition from the middle school to high school level.

No disrespect to Newport, great win but did NCC show up?

I still hold to that. It is worthless for the AA teams to play each other twice.

They played flat, Newport played inspired and made the plays. NewCath had a lot more yards than Newport, but had a ton of penalty yardage as well. Couple that with 4 or 5 turnovers and you have a recipe for disaster. Newport came out hitting, played disciplined, and when NewCath got within the 20's held firm and caused TOs.

Newport had their share of turnovers including the 103 yard interception return by Newport's Naire Jones, which was ultimately called back for holding.

That's what I was saying, Newport forced a lot of TOs.

Is Naire a little kid? I remember seeing a good DB last year on the middle school team.

Do they have the tall skinny kid playing qb ? He had a nice arm.

Naire Jones is a tall, skinny African American kid with an arm like a cannon. He plays both sides of the ball. Safety on defense and QB on offense. He is the "real deal" and may even be a better basketball player, if you can imagine that... In addition to Jones, Newport has several freshmen athletes that are extremely quick. They are a glimpse of what Newport's future holds.

The DB is Brandon Carter. He broke his ankle last week and is now, unfortunately, out for the season. Best of luck to him in his recovery!!

I only saw the 4th quarter but what a wild game of Mo swings.

NCC up 12-7 driving for the KO touchdown and they throw an INT 5 yards deep in the endzone that is returned for a TD but Newport was called for a hold at the 30 yard line.

Then Newport goes nowhere and punts. NCC returns the punt to the Newport 22 yard line but wait there is a block in the back that takes it back past midfield.

NCC drives again for the KO touchdown and is at the 20 but wait the QB can't complete the handoff. The ball lays on the turf and Newport scoops it up and returns it 80 yards for a TD untouched for a 13-12 lead.

Then Newport kicks off and the ball sails over the NCC returners to about the 2 yard line. They return it to the 20. With time running out and faced with 4th downs twice they make them and the drive continues. A bunch of passes follow and it seems about half of them NCC receivers get their hands on but can't catch, and the other half Newport could have intercepted but couldn't hold on to them. Finally there are 4 incompletes and Newport held.

Would be nice to see these two meet again for the third time.

Thanks. The qb uncorked a throw as an 8th grader that you rarely see and I think it was Carter that caught it.

Great win Newport!
