(Information gathered from various media sources, coaches, and BGP members)

This week marks the halfway point of the football regular season. Most districts have seen their playoff picture come into full view, although there won’t be as many district games in the final few weeks thanks to the new realignment.

Here are some of the standout performances of the past week as well as what to expect in the week ahead:

· Bowling Green fell behind Warren Central 6-0 then scored the next 62 points in a 62-6 win over the Dragons. The Purples scored on nine of 11 possessions, as quarterback Trent Steelman was 11-of-13 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver D.L. Moore, who is scheduled to visit South Carolina this weekend, caught five passes for 108 yards. The 6-foot-5 Moore has already been to Colorado and has preliminary plans to also visit Nebraska and Purdue.

· Montgomery County quarterback Kaleb Curtis may be the best player in the state you haven’t heard of. The Indians quarterback ran for 156 yards on 31 carries and threw for 99 more as Montgomery County improved to 4-1 with a 30-28 overtime win over Ashland.

· Another quarterback you may not have heard about is Jordan Ellis of Warren East, who threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a fifth to lead his team past Franklin-Simpson 34-7. Terrence Dunn added 144 yards on 12 carries for the Raiders (5-0).

· Justin Mitchell caught four passes for 133 yards to lead Russell past East Carter 28-10.

· Russellville’s Jamarcus Gordon rushed for 157 yards on 16 carries to help the Panthers beat Butler County 32-8.

· Doss quarterback Demetric Unseld threw for 172 yards and four touchdowns and added 68 rushing yards and a score to lead the Dragons past Iroquois 40-0.

· Woodford County is showing that last year’s 8-4 record and upset of Lafayette in the playoffs was no fluke. The Yellow jackets went on the road and stung Johnson Central 43-22. Steven Duckworth threw for 290 yards and two scores and added three touchdowns on the ground as Woodford County improved to 5-0. Shawn Grimm, Johnson Central’s leading rusher, was held to 45 yards on 12 carries.

· Quarterback Tyler Olinger accounted for all nine touchdowns in Hazard’s 65-26 win over Perry County Central in the annual Black/Gold Bowl. Olinger threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 141 yards and five scores as Hazard improved to 5-0. Josh Kidd had 191 yards receiving in the game.

· Justin McCoy rushed for 182 yards and Daniel Armstrong added 114 yards to lead Fairview past Paris 35-7.

· Hopkins Central’s Keith Couch etched his name into the state record books with a 99-yard run against Muhlenberg North last week. Couch’s long run is the 16th different 99-yard touchdown run, according to the KHSAA Record Book. Last year, North Bullitt’s Dalton Cissell and Edmonson County’s Brandon Poteet each had a 99-yard run. Couch finished with 149 yards on just five carries in his team’s 42-8 win.

· St. Xavier quarterback Ben Zoeller rushed for 102 yards on 12 carries, and Deuce Finch added 103 yards as the Tigers held off Manual 21-14 for their 16th straight win over the Crimsons.

Five games to keep an eye on this week:

· Belfry vs. Pikeville – Pond Creek will be rocking this week as Belfry looks to extend their six-game winning streak against their country rival. Belfry is 4-0 and coming off an open week, while the Panthers are 4-1.

· Clay County vs. Middlesboro – In a contrast of styles, Middleboro and their veer offense play the high-flying Tigers and pass-happy quarterback Zach Lewis, who has thrown for over 1,500 yards in five games.

· Covington Catholic vs. Beechwood – Don’t let Covington Catholic’s 1-4 record fool you. The Colonels have lost to four teams with a combined record of 15-4. But it’s been a long time since CovCath has lost to both Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic in the same season.

· Paducah Tilghman vs. Mayfield – One of western Kentucky’s longest running rivalries rekindles in Paducah as Tilghman and Mayfield meet for the 94th time. Tilghman leads the all-time series 47-36-10, but Mayfield has won eight of the last 12 meetings, including last year’s 14-7 overtime thriller.

· Trinity vs. St. Xavier – The only active school Trinity has a losing record against is St. Xavier. The Tigers own a slim 32-29-2 record over the Shamrocks, who have closed the gap by winning six of the last nine meetings. Friday’s game between the top two schools in Class 6A will be played at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Kentucky vs. The World

Here are the records of Kentucky schools against the border states through the first five weeks of the season:

· Indiana 6-4 (.6000)

· Tennessee 4-4 (.500)

· Ohio 5-6 (.454)

· Virginia 1-5 (.166)

Streak of the Week

· Trigg County junior quarterback Donald Bush has played the equivalent of an entire regular season without throwing an interception. In ten games dating back to last year, Bush has thrown 131 consecutive attempts without a pick. He is 72-of-131 passing for 1,032 yards and 11 touchdowns during that streak.

· St. Xavier vs. Manual (2,675)
