September 20, 200719 yr What a gutsy request. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-09-19-iran-ground-zero_N.htm NEW YORK — A request by aides to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the controversial leader be allowed to visit Ground Zero next week when he attends the United Nations' General Assembly meeting was rejected, a police spokesman said Wednesday. "He wanted to go into the pit and lay a wreath," Browne said. Even if Ahmadinejad had asked to visit the area near Ground Zero, that "would also be opposed by NYPD on security grounds," he said.
September 20, 200719 yr What specific security reason was it, that his request was rejected? There were Iranians killed on 9/11 at the WTC as well....
September 20, 200719 yr Author From another usatoday report. • The president defended the decision of New York officials to deny permission for Iran's president, who will be in New York next week for a United States meeting, to lay a wreath at Ground Zero. "I can understand why they would not want somebody that's running a country that's a state sponsor of terror down there at the site," he said.
September 20, 200719 yr Who is the wreath for? The victims or the terroists? I'm not sure what all of the uproar is about.
September 20, 200719 yr I would not allow him to even fly over in a plane. He should be no where near the site.
September 20, 200719 yr Author Who is the wreath for? The victims or the terroists? I'm not sure what all of the uproar is about. My first thought was he would place it for the victims and go back and say it was for the terrorists.
September 20, 200719 yr I would not allow him to even fly over in a plane. He should be no where near the site. Why?
September 20, 200719 yr Why? He is the president of a nation we consider to be a terrorist supporter and supplier of weaponry used against our troops in Iraq. We believe him to have been a member of the group who held our embassy staffers hostage for 444 days in the late '70s. I could not take even a remote chance that he would go home and gloat that he stood at the site of Al Queda's greatest conquest. Watch what he says during his address to the UN and see if he should be given any courtesy at all on America soil.
September 20, 200719 yr So...the objections are based upon what he might do when he gets home, not on any tangible proof that he would do such?
September 20, 200719 yr So...the objections are based upon what he might do when he gets home, not on any tangible proof that he would do such?I think I'm beginning to agree with those that say he has no business there. He hates the US and supports terrorism. The first is enough to reject any request he makes.
September 20, 200719 yr So...the objections are based upon what he might do when he gets home, not on any tangible proof that he would do such? Yeah, that would be good enough for me, but I also provided two that he did do if you need justification to deny a stage to someone who is responsible for providing an armor piercing IED to Iraqi insurgents.

Don't get me wrong...I don't agree with him, or like him. But, as a citizen of a country in which even those with whom we disagree are afforded the right to assembly in public places, I disagree with denying him the visit based upon what he might do. As the representative of his country, I feel that his laying the wreath in honor of those of his citizens who were killed, or family members of citizens of his country, should be allowed.
