I think ER was held to about zero yards by the first string defense. They did have one first down, but the long botched snap on the punt attempt erased those yards and they were mostly 3 and out the rest of the first half.

 

Belfry used about 6 different combinations in the backfield with the first string. Varney and Lovern started at the halfback positions with May at the FB. The PA announcer kept calling Lovern "Laverne". I guess that makes Thomas Varney "Shirley".

 

Belfry subbed the 2nd stringers with about 2 min to go in the first half and never went back to the starters. I expected the starters to play the first series of the 3rd Q, but they didn't. Lots of JV and freshman guys got in some good playing time and Pirategurl was right about Francis, he looked very good.

According to the News-Express... Belfry gained over 370 yards of offense, ER had 38.

 

May finished with around 125 rushing and 3 TD.

 

Hopefully SV can play Belffry competitively enough that the Pirate starters can get a full 4 quarters of football in.

 

It's also funny that Belfry's first string defense has scored more points than all three teams have scored against them. 2-0 after last night's safety.

East Ridge has some nice players too, and I think they will make the playoffs. They may give Pike Central a run for the 3rd playoff spot in the district.

 

Epling (RB) and Thacker (QB) stand out as guys who can make a difference in a football game. Thacker was limping most of the 2nd quarter, in obvious pain, but held in there and played hard. I hope you are right on the 3rd playoff spot. Shoot, I'd settle for 4th. Epling and Thacker were taken out late in the 2nd quarter. Bryan Casey was the freshmen quarterback that ran the offense when it scored for East Ridge. Actually, he ran it the whole second half with the JV and freshmen playing.

Yes, he and Hickman were in a different package along with May and they played a couple series like that. Ivan played well, especiall at the DE spot where he started.

I heard today that Sutherland tore his ACL and is out for the season. I hate to hear that, he has had so many problems with his shoulder, then the mystery infection. I was hoping he was going to be able to play his senior season to the fullest, and now this.

Man..that's a fairly substantial loss. With all due respect to Jimbo Stanley I feel Southerland is Belfry's best O-lineman. Additionally, we lose depth at the NG/DT position. Hate to hear this for the kid.

Will is a really good kid, too, and I can't say enough about how bad I feel for kids who sustain injuries like this during their senior years.
