Kingfish stole my answer, but I'll repeat it anyway. Absolutely. At least in the case of Griffey, Jr...Andruw Jones was/is/has been (whatever), at the least, an equal to Griffey Jr as a defensive centerfielder, and, IMO, better.

That's a tough call on Andruw being equal to Jr. I guess its like picking between Scarlett J. and Catherine Zeta Jones. You win either way and you'll have a big smile on your face.

Mays liked to look flashy with his basket catches, etc. However, I believe a lot of it was hype from playing in New York. His best known catch was a fine catch. However, I think all of us have seen many better catches- some by Jones.

I wouldn't get in a big argument about whether Jones or Griffey has been a better defensive CF. Personally, I'd take Jones but would be fine with Griffey and I understand anyone picking him. What I don't understand is the belief that Andruw Jones is "not even remotely close to the same league as...The Kid."

I suppose all of that is in the eyes of the beholder. It was a fine catch but it has been hyped since that time. Are you saying that you haven't seen better catches? Mays as a great fielder. However, all who play/played in New York reach "greatness" much easier and their "light" sparkles brighter than do players in other venues.

 

I will say, having seen both play in person on numerous occasions, that I would rate Jones over Mays. Actually, a lot of those more knowledgeable than me, agree. But, then, it is all a matter of opinion.

He made another fine catch tonight against the Reds. I don't recall Mays making too many diving catches. That is probably because he didn't do so. I'll still take Jones.

Mayes roamed centerfield in parks that would dwarf the bandboxes of today. Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field, Sportsman's Park, Dodger Stadium before they moved in the fences, and of course, Candlestick Park. No centerfielder today plays 81 home games in the conditions Mayes endured at Candlestick. I have NO problem with Mayes in CF on this list ahead of Jones. I also don't remember Mayes' manager taking him out of the game for playing lackidasically in CF.
