Mike Yeagle: Whistling a familiar tune

Featured Replies

The first time Mike Yeagle took a hiatus from football, he made a clean break. While sitting out the 2002 season for undisclosed medical reasons, the legendary Beechwood coach didn't attend practices or games. He spent very little time with players and coaches.

He later called it "rock bottom."

So this time - after Yeagle resigned from Beechwood following the 2005 season - he spent the fall lingering on the coaching periphery. He was flooded with requests to break down game film, critique practices and talk to teams. So he made a deal with his friends in the coaching ranks. In preparation for two games, each was allowed to pick the brain of the man who won eight state titles.

Now he's back, on a quest for No. 9.

Yeagle was hired by Lloyd in February, and his players have spent the past six months learning the Yeagle way. It's not complicated to explain, and it's not easy to endure.

But it is highly effective.

"Before, we had kids come to practice and screw around," said Lloyd senior Jesse French. "This year, everybody's working hard because we want to win a state championship. He's already got eight of them, so we think this is a good opportunity for us."

I don't know how long it will take him or what kind of shape te program was in when he got there but I know that Coach Yeagle will get the job done and bring a title to Lloyd.

Llyod wasn't too far from being at the top when Lucas was there. They now have one of the all time greats coaching them. It should be exciting around there and I wish them the best of luck!

The things I have heard from the kids have me intrigued. They seem to be buying into the coaches philosophy. It's definetly electric around town anymore. I can't help but think that in the near future, Lloyd will stop loosing it's better athletes to other programs around the area.

Pretty hard not to buy in to somebody with the background of coach Yeagle. I remember when I first graduated I had a chance to here him speak at UK. He is one of the few coaches that I would have absoloutly loved to play for.

Coach Yeagle is a great coach and a greater person. Its great to see him back into coaching. In time Lloyd WILL bring home a title.

From what I have seen in a very few month's in Erlanger/Elsmere is the excitement for the Juggernauts, the communty support, the encouragement from Lloyds coaching staff to the young player's at the Erlanger Lions program and the many many face's that are back willing to support and help Coach Yeagle with whatever he wants someone to do. The enthusiasm from the high school players to the lions players is unbelievable in Erlange/Elsmere and the talk around town is proof that it is happening. I can not say when and if Lloyd will win a championship however it is in the air in Juggernaut Country. And it is great to see Coach Cooley walking the sidelines again. JD

Yeagle has probably more respect in NKY than any other coach and its not just because he has more State Championships than any other coach its because of his relationship to the kids and other coaches. Every kid I hear interviewed or talk to that has played for him says tremendous things about him. Every coach that mentions his name has the utmost admiration for this guy. He is intense, demanding and very knowledgable. I thought him mentioning his father, former high school coach and youth football coach as his inspiration to coach was outstanding. What a lucky guy.

Love me some Mike Yeagle. I hope he has a stellar year in Erlanger.
