Bell County/Johnson Central scrimmage

Featured Replies

I saw on Johnson Central's marquee that JC is playing @ Bell County tonight (8-10-07) in a scrimmage game.

If anybody member on here goes, please post any info that you get from the game.

I will be going and will update tonight. I probably won't have any stats, but I can atleast give a rundown.

Traditionally Bell does not show much in scrimmages. They run about the same 10 or 12 plays the entire game. I don't know if Johnson Central does that or not, but tonight probably won't be a good indicator for the 2 teams.

That is pretty much JC's scrimmage policy as well. Any info you can post will be appericated. :thumb:

Central never has held back in past in scrimage, shucks they even shot the cannon off last scrimage I went to haha. Matney never holds anything back. He would pull out everything if he was playing checkers just the way he is.

Great night for football on Log Mountain. Scrimmage had unusual format...don't really know if any score was kept. Both teams ran series of 10 offensive plays and then went on defense for 10 plays from other offense. Halftime found neither team scoring a touchdown. Both teams seemed fairly evenly matched. Bell's young players in new roles stepped up. Neither team scored as I saw it in the regular format. Then goal line series were ran by both teams. JC scored on their first series, matched by Bell. Each team with one touchdown. Then a series featuring the kicking game was ran. JC's kicker tried three field goals from approximately extra point distance or maybe a little longer. He made one of three. Bell County's kicker, Monte Merrick, hit a forty+ FG and then one just inside 50, and only missed on his final attempt from 57 yards as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced back! Then JV seemingly ran out the last series. If you add up the scores it would have been Bell with the edge by a FG! But I don't think they were keeping any kind of score. Both teams and fans seemed to have a great time. Lots of smashmouth football with a little flair once in a while. Enjoyed by all. BC boosters appreciate the support of all I am sure.

Thanks for the info!

How did Johnson Centrals defense look?

Hard to really tell, but both defenses played pretty well for this early in year. With neither team scoring in regular exchange of series in either half. JC seemed to contain Bell's running game, but looked a little vulnerable to the pass.

Hopefully JC's next scrimmage against Leslie County will follow more of a game format.

Where are you Log Mountain Boy? Would like to hear your read on last night's scrimmage.

I was at the scrimmage and thought we watched two great programs with two great coaches perform. The long trip to Log Mountian is dreaded by all teams and I thought JC handled the heat and ride well. I was told by a Bell fan that this was Bell's fifth scrimmage and JC has not had a scimmage and this showed up. Central has numbers and size and Bell has alot of speed.

The format was awful and it was hard to evaluate. JC's Dials was on his way to scoring on a touch down pass when the refs blew the play dead. The Bell kicker is awesome and has the ability to win a close game. Niether team could mount a running game on each other although I thought JC was better at running. Both teams has some success passing and the Bell QB is very soild and Bell might have had an edge in passing.

I feel both teams have areas to address due to graduation, but with Hilton and Matney as coaches these teams will be ready to go by the start of the season. The mountians can be proud to have two class coaches and programs to root for.

Bell's QB may be top 2 in 4A. I am shocked that neither team could run the ball. How many seniors does Bell County have this year?

The roster has 6 seniors, Bell may have the best kicker in the state. I was impressed with the running backs for Bell. # 15 and #33 someone said that the #33 was a freshman. That is hard to believe. # 85 for bell and #67 was all over the field defensively.

I thought the scrimmage was pretty balanced. Both teams played pretty well. Johnson Central had a good defense that reminded me a little bit of Rockastle. They are very physical and a hard hitting team and were well-coached. They should have a great season this year. I was a little surprised, they ran a reverse-half back pass I believe the 3rd play of the game. The corner back and safety bit a little bit and it was open.

As for Bell I thought they looked pretty good. I thought Spencer Greer stuck out running the football. Also Matt Simpson seemed to run hard. Bell's defense played pretty well as a unit, but there is definitly a lot of room for improvement. Bell is still such a young football team (they were young last year). I believe there are only 5 seniors. The O-line is very young. I believe the team will really be clicking well late in the season.

Both teams have a lot to be excited about!
