Jeff Brantley: Coffey Chokes!

Featured Replies

I loathe, the word "Choke", as it relates to sports....:madman:

I understand why, but what other term would you suggest for a situation when a player folds up and can not perform at a level he is used to when the pressure is most intense?

It is what it is. Like it or not, Coffey has shown himself to be a gag-job artist.

I would argue that Coffey has been consistently bad regardless of the situation. Thus, you can't simply label him as a choker but , rather, he consistently stinks.

I've debated this topic several times and in sports, there will be winners, loser, those that can and those that can't....Pressure is relative and MLB pitchers, miss spots and get hit, more than they "blew it".

Not easy taking a round ball and trying to throw over a plate, with a batter yielding a bat. I've seen terrible swings, become bloop singles to win games and it's not a "choke" but rather, the batter got the job done.

Whomever related the word "choke" to athletics, never was a competitor.

Why do you say that? I've choked in a crucial situation before. I know exactly what it looks like and feels like. The most successful competitors are able to block out all the noise and distractions and focus on the task at hand. Less successful are the ones who do hear the footsteps, and tighten up because of it.

Um, it's not like he was in the bullpen all 14 of those years.

Actually, Yes, he was in the bullpen ALL 14 of those years...check the stats.

Brantley was in the bullpen in parts or all of each of his ML seasons.

Over those same 14 ML seasons, he only had 18 starts while appearing in 615 games...I would say he has seen his share of bullpen duty...597 appearances out of the pen.

My entire point was that Brantley has choked a time or two as well and his comment directed at Coffey was over the line.

Very simple, from a sporting contest, emerges a winner and loser. Success and failure, do not equate to choking but rather, one found a way to win and the other didn't.

Does a closer choke, when he can't record a save, in a 1 run game....Has he been successful, if he allows 3 runs and still wins. Does a FT shooter get labeled a choker, if he misses a game tying shot but his team gets the rebound and wins the game....I could go on but these are examples, of not succeeding.

I won't and never will label any athlete, as a choker. I've failed miserably at times, in my sports career and beyond.

A coach I played for refered to it as "swallowing the oyster"
