Dead Period Baseball

Featured Replies

Don't know the answer to this one, but, what are the rules concerning high schoolers playing baseball during the "dead period?"

Seems to me that baseball is a summer sport and shouldn't fall under the same constraints as basketball and football, though I know it probably does.

ex. -- the same group of guys that just finished the KHSAA baseball season continues to play through the summer, including the "dead period". I assume they can do that, as long as the high school coach doesn't coach them. What about assistant coaches...can they coach kids during the DP?

Can the team wear the same uniforms, use the same bats, helmets, catcher's gear, etc., during the DP that they used in the spring HS season?

Anybody out there shed any light on the situation?

My assumption is that a)asst coaches cannot coach during the dead period and b)origin of the equipment is not an issue.

No coach who was affiliated with them in High school is allowed to have contact or coach during this period. I totaly agree the dead period should be sport specific in its periods.

The "dead period" applies to even assistant coaches. In Paducah, the coach of the American Legion baseball team is an assistant at Heath. He has to sit out for two weeks, coaching only when two players that will be back at Heath next season are given the day off. When the Legion team took batting practice at Heath one day for a tournament, the Heath players weren't allowed to because it would constitute an athletics-related use of their school's facilities.

On the other hand, Mayfield's Legion team plays their games at Graves County High School. I assume that they are allowed to do so because the Legion pays rent to Graves for use of their facility.

It should very sport to sport, baseball should be played/practiced during the summer.

Dead period for the summer teams who are coached by their high school coaches, is for a 2 week travel and play vacation.
